The return of J.T. the L.A. Storyteller Podcast features Eric Solis, an L.A. born architect and designer now living and consulting in Mexico City, where the rise of a new, international gentrification has pushed residents like himself to fight back and organize. Solis’s roots in Los Angeles also run deep, however, especially given his time with HNTB Corporation in collaboration with Michael Maltzan Architecture, or the firm behind the already world-famous 6th Street Bridge, which officially reopened in June 2022. Solis and I discuss his upbringing through Greater Los Angeles, as well as his unique position as a first-generation college graduate (USC, 2010) on a team of seasoned, mostly white architects who had little to no lived experience with Mexican-American communities like those of East Los Angeles. We also discuss the strengths and shortcomings of the 6th Street Bridge, as well as what Designing For The Realities has looked like for Solis most recently. Last but not least, we uplift “No Hablamos Ingles,” a fashion show consisting of some of Mexico’s fiercest fashion leaders taking place right in Los Angeles this September 21st, free and open to all of the Pueblito.

Storyteller Podcast we’re joined by Phoenix Tso, who chats with us about The Tenant Association , a new podcast on the Chinatown Hillside Villa Tenant Association, which formed in 2018 after residents there received a 300% Rent Increase without any prior notice from their landlord; in addition to the origins of the podcast and Tso’s investigative work, we consider the terms “affordable housing” and “eminent domain.” Tso notes that across the U.S., approximately 800,000 currently affordable units will lose their affordability within the next decade due to expiration dates for rent prices set in their housing covenants. On Wednesday, July 3rd, the Rios-Vela family attended the first court hearing for the alleged and primary suspect behind the murder of The Rios Brothers, Marcos Navarro, 33 years old. With L.A. City Council recapped, let’s place LAUSD elections from March into perspective. LAUSD has a board of seven members, each of which is elected every four years. The board meets regularly on Tuesday afternoons, and by a long shot, its most important job is managing L.A. You can also catch this WRAP-UP on YouTube . On Friday, May 17, the L.A. City Council presented a number of local celebrities with some proclamations. May 17th was declared “Shohei Ohtani day,” while May 19th is now “Father Greg Boyle” day, at least on the official calendar of the L.A. City Council chambers. Afterwards, a number of different speakers made Public Comment, many in opposition to an eviction notice filed against the Hernandez family at Plazita Olvera, who’s owned the landmark destination’s only burro or donkey for over 60 years. Plazita Olvera is located less than half a mile north of L.A. City Hall, but half a mile south of L.A. City Hall is Suehiro cafe, or the former location of Suehiro Cafe, which had been in operation in Little Tokyo for over 50 years before closing this January not because of an eviction notice, but because of a massive rent hike imposed by the landlord; two months later, a brand-new mural of Ohsei Ohtani was revealed across the street from Suehiro’s former location in Little Tokyo. It was a special day on 1st street, full of vibes, not so different from those at this L.A. City Council meeting. While institutions like L.A. City Council have the power to declare and even decorate for symbolic purposes like Ohtani or Father Boyle day, they do not have the power to prevent eviction notices like the one given to the Hernandez family and their burro at Plazita Olvera, nor the power to prevent rent hikes for legacy businesses like Kenji Suzuki’s Suehiro Cafe in Little Tokyo. The question for Ohtani in particular then is if his legacy will go the way of Fernando Valenzuela, another “once-in-a-generation” talent who the Dodgers would nonetheless isolate from local working class communities outside of the jersey and uniform. Today the Los Angeles Dodgers are worth $5.4 billion. But for the land they took to play ball, Vincent “Chente” Montalvo’s family received what his grandfather John De Nava called peanuts. His grandmother, Adela De Nava–now 91 years old(!)–also continues to stand by this claim. It’s not just about the money, though. Earlier this year, California Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo introduced AB 1950, or the Chavez Ravine Accountability Act, which would order the city of Los Angeles to atone for its part in evicting nearly 1,400 Mexican-American families in the Bishop, La Loma, and Palo Verde communities to place Dodger stadium on top. Los Angeles could definitely use more Public Defenders in the County’s Superior Court, where judges overwhelmingly hail from the prosecutorial side. Before you leave the Superior Court Judge section of your ballot blank, tune into this podcast to learn about Natasha Khamashta’s write-in campaign and that of her colleagues’, the Defenders of Justice . Natasha Khamashta is a Palestinian-American Public Defender who’s served in this role for over 20 years; she is running for Superior Court Office No. 93. The only thing an eligible voter needs to do is write in “Natasha” in the write-in candidate section on this part of the ballot to elect her for the seat. Recall that any eligible voter in L.A. County, no matter the zip code, can cast a vote for the 10 Superior Court Judge offices up for election this Tuesday, March 5th; you can also vote this Sunday or Monday, depending on what’s better for your schedule through your local Vote Center, which you can locate here . Why does it matter? (3:21) Yes, there were more important things to do besides watching this debate. At the same time… (3:55) Dianne Feinstein’s sudden death while in office is, or should be, instructional (4:49) Feinstein’s passing has led to a brand new race for CA-30’s Congressional District , among other things (5:29) If Feinstein can pass away while still in office like she did, so can Joe Biden; that’s why Newsom is out there (7:27) For what it’s worth, Newsom definitely left DeSantis in the dust through the debate (9:09) To most people, politicians are hacks and grifters; while there’s a lot of merit to this, there are also tens of thousands of people who are employed or not depending on which one of them is office. That’s also what we vote on (10:06) A good example of this is Rick Caruso vs Karen Bass. Bass was the standout choice for too many voters not just for her personality, but for her broader network with and for communities of color (11:20) Speaking of Los Angeles, INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING IS COMING TO L.A. According to Tlaib, over 65% of Americans now support a ceasefire, and every moment the U.S. fails to halt Israel only leads to more lives lost and irreparable damage for the Palestinian people. On Wednesday, November 15th, Jewish Voices for Peace is staging a Mass Action in Hollywood also calling for an immediate ceasefire. This is a special rebroadcast episode for the first ever panel-discussion by K-Town Is Oaxacan Korean. On Thursday, November 2, 2023, K-Town Is Oaxacan Korean, also known as K-Town Is OK, brought together long-time and former residents of Koreatown into conversation. The panel, free and open to the public, was held just over a year after the public release of a private discussion between L.A. City Council Members Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo and Kevin De Leon, and Federation of Labor leader Ron Herrera, in which they dismissed Korean-American residents of the area and ridiculed Oaxacan or Mexican-American members of the community as “short, dark people” and “feos (ugly).” The panel discussion was held online and featured a line-up of guest speakers, culminating a year-long effort by my colleague Helen H. Kim and I documenting Oaxacan-American, Korean-American and other voices in Koreatown through our website and podcast, K-Town Is OK .
