For the last 20–25 years, the topic of "when will we see a sub-2 hour marathon?" has become more frequently discussed.
The answers before 2017 were typically "20-40 years from now" OR "it is not humanly possible."
It is now inevitable that we will see a Sub-2-HOUR MARATHON, but when?
When I researched this video, I found some fascinating stats.
1925 - first sub 2:30, Albert Michelsen (USA)
1953 - first sub 2:20, Jim Peters (UK)—70 years ago!
1963 - first sub 2:15, Leonard Edelen (USA)
1967 - first sub 2:10, Derek Clayton (Australia)
1988 - first sub 2:07, Belayneh Dinsamo (Ethiopia)
2003 - first sub 2:05, Paul Tergat (Kenya) (at Berlin Marathon)
NEXT 8 MARATHON WORLD RECORDS AT BERLIN MARATHON
2008 - first sub 2:04, Haile Gebrselassie (Ethiopia)
2014 - first sub 2:03, Dennis Kimetto (Kenya)
2018 - first sub 2:02, Eluid Kipchoge (Kenya)
2023 - first sub 2:01, Kelvin Kiptum (Kenya) (at Chicago Marathon)
East African dominance started with Adebe Bikila in 1960, but really took off with the first sub-2:07 run in 1988.
The super-shoe era started in 2017, with an incredible "BREAKING 2" marketing campaign from Nike at Monza race track in Italy, where we saw him run 2:00:25, miss the barrier, but catapult Nike's 4% shoe to fame.
The marathon hasn't been the same since.
When do you think we will see a sub-2-hour marathon?
