In this episode of The Electorette , host Jen Taylor-Skinner is joined by Kelly Hall , Executive Director of The Fairness Project , to discuss how ballot measures are transforming the political landscape. As congressional dysfunction deepens and the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" threatens vital programs like Medicaid, direct democracy offers a bold and effective workaround. Kelly breaks down the Fairness Project’s 2024 wins—where voters in red states overturned abortion bans, raised the minimum wage, and expanded healthcare access. These aren’t just policy victories; they’re blueprints for bypassing broken institutions and reclaiming power from unresponsive lawmakers. Ballot initiatives not only protect rights under attack—they can reshape public consensus and influence national debates. From lawsuits to signature drives, and from grassroots momentum to constitutional amendments, this conversation is both a reality check and a call to action. Whether you live in a red state, blue state, or somewhere in between, ballot initiatives may be the most underused—and urgently needed—tool we have to defend democracy. Episode Chapters (00:00) Empowering Voters Through Ballot Initiatives Ballot initiatives empower citizens to enact change on critical issues in conservative states, influencing the national narrative. (12:25) The Power of Direct Democracy Citizen-initiated ballot measures serve as a tool for marginalized groups in red states, while corporations use them in blue states. (24:14) Expanding Impact of Ballot Initiatives Citizen-initiated ballot measures challenge conservative agendas and shape national discourse on reproductive rights, healthcare, and minimum wage. (37:36) Mobilizing for Direct Democracy Ballot measures are a democratic tool for change, but face challenges such as signature collection and threats from lawmakers. (45:07) Getting Involved With Fairness Project Nature's timeline and stages of ballot measures, engaging with the Fairness Project, personal reflections, and a call to action. #BallotMeasures #FairnessProject #ReproductiveRights #DirectDemocracy #Medicaid #MinimumWage #TheElectorette #AbortionRights #PoliticalPodcast #CivicPower #FightBack #BigBeautifulBill #KellyHall #RedStateResistance #DemocracyInAction Learn more about your ad choices. It's Tuesday and we are joined by investigative journalist and director of The Undercurrent , Lauren Windsor, to discuss her new piece in Rolling Stone on the Texas state government's war on climate change policy. But first we take a look at Andrew Cuomo's low energy announcement that he is staying in the race as an independent, a very sleepy independent. It turns out that the supreme court green lighting mass federal firings will lead to the Trump administration dismantling the Department of Education. Something conservatives have been clamoring for since reconstruction. In the fun half we look into the great MAGA Saga. The conservative world is fracturing over Trump's refusal to release the Epstein files. House GOP's vote against unsealing the documents, Glenn Beck suggests finding a fall guy, Charlie Kirk trust his friends in the government but the MAGA base as reflected in comments on Trump's Truth Social page are not buying it. The majority of elected Democrats would prefer to talk only about policy, but that's not enough for today's freewheeling new media environment. It's way past time for Dems to figure out how to shoot the sh*t—and stop being the kids at the front of the class who don't know how to talk to the ones in the back. And when it comes to Epstein, Trump & co were either lying about the pedophiles back then, or they're lying now to protect themselves. Plus, make the Republicans own all the healthcare cuts: they are happening because of "Trumpcare." Many parts of the US have experienced brutal, deadly heat in recent weeks—and there’s plenty of summer left. Intense rainfall, made more likely by warming, dropped more than 15 inches of rain in central Texas, claiming more than 130 lives. In addition to the devastating human toll these weather events take, they expose critical vulnerabilities in our energy infrastructure. Power grids are seeing tremendous demand from air conditioning, not to mention other factors including data centers. And of course, extreme weather events cause shocks that go well beyond power outages; they damage transmission lines and cascade across other critical infrastructure like water systems and healthcare facilities. The question isn't whether climate change is reshaping energy security—it's how quickly we can adapt. As traditional definitions of national security expand to include climate threats, what will it take to build truly resilient energy systems. This week, Bill Loveless speaks with Kate Guy about how extreme summer weather events are redefining energy security. Kate is a senior fellow and managing director of the geopolitics of climate change and the energy transition at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA. In this week’s episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Danny Richter, director of the Pricing Carbon Initiative, about the existing suite of carbon pricing policies, a set of climate policy tools designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by requiring companies and other entities to pay for each ton of carbon dioxide they release into the atmosphere. Richter evaluates the international and domestic approaches to carbon pricing policies, explaining their history, uptake, and longevity. Richter highlights the flexibility of carbon pricing programs—which allows policymakers to tailor the sources and investment of revenues from carbon pricing to their unique policy priorities—as key to the long-term success of these programs. Richter then outlines shifting attitudes toward carbon pricing in the United States, highlighting how successful cap-and-invest initiatives emphasize the economic advantages of these policies while delivering climate benefits. They weren’t employees. They were partners. Les Schwab didn’t build a company. He built a culture. This episode reveals how one small-town tire dealer scaled to $3 billion by turning customers into evangelists and employees into owners. Somewhere between changing his first flat tire and opening his 410th Les Schwab Tire Center, Les discovered something profound: his people weren't just working for him, they were working with him. They weren't building his dream, they were building their own . This episode is a case study on how strategy, incentives, and trust create massive advantages that resources can’t buy. When investment bankers offered Schwab billions to sell his empire, he refused after asking himself just one question: “What would I do with the money?” Les Schwab understood something most never learn: the real wealth isn't in what you keep. A little over a week after the devastating floods in Central Texas, the death toll has reached more than 130 people — and the search for the missing continues. In the aftermath of the disaster, there have been mounting questions about how local officials handled the critical hours before and after the storm. Today, we look at the missed opportunities that may have contributed to the growing tragedy — and whether anything more could have been done to save lives. Guest: Christopher Flavelle, a Times reporter covering how President Trump is transforming the local government.. Background reading: Kerr County, where most of the deaths occurred, failed to secure a warning system , even as local officials remained aware of the risks and as billions of dollars were available for similar projects. Years before the floods, the Federal Emergency Management Agency had approved the removal of many Camp Mystic buildings from flood zones, records show. Eight-year-olds at camp, families in their R.V.s: These were some of the lives lost to the Texas floods. For more information on today’s episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily . On this week's episode of Building Local Power, we continue our series honoring ILSR's co-founder David Morris, who passed away in June. One way to measure the impact of someone's work is to measure their influence on those they mentored. And if you ask Stacy Mitchell, the word "influence" isn't even sufficient for what she learned from David Morris. Hired into an entry-level position at ILSR by David Morris in 1997, Mitchell now leads the Independent Business Initiative and co-directs the entire organization. Her time working with Morris led to a long and distinguished career at ILSR and in the broader antimonopoly movement. On this episode, Mitchell shares her reflections on her time working with Morris and on the impact of his work overall. Listen for her insights about how prescient Morris's work is proving to be, as well as his demanding curiosity and tireless advocacy. Ultimately, Mitchell claims, Morris's philosophy is a blueprint for what it means to build local power, and Morris did that until the very end of his life. Don't miss this stirring conversation about one revolutionary's impact on another. On this episode of the Unsupervised Learning podcast, Razib welcomes back Ethan Strauss , a writer who has covered sports and culture for the past decade, including in the book The Victory Machine: The Making and Unmaking of the Warriors Dynasty . More recently his writing is to be found at his Substack, House of Strauss , which is notable for offering a candid take on the cross-pollination between broader culture and athletics, notably in the piece Nike's End of Men: Why Nike no longer wants us to Be Like Mike . Strauss and Razib first discuss professional sports and the different representation of various nationalities. Strauss recounts the generational attempt by the NBA to get Chinese representation to gin up a lucrative rivalry, and how it sputtered due to the reality that 1.4 billion Han Chinese seem to have less basketball talent than small nations like Croatia. Razib also asks about how and why baseball is popular in parts of Latin America and East Asia, and why there are so many more Dominicans in MLB than Mexicans. Strauss says differences between populations are so obvious in sports there’s no need for complex social explanations. Then they explore the role of DEI in professional sports, and especially the NBA, and how it might be impacting decisions in the league. They recall the years around 2020, when a drive for minority representation, and in particular of blacks, was prevalent across the corporate world, and how thatimpacted professional sports. Strauss then offers his theory for why the Dallas Mavericks inexplicably traded away a potentially generational talent, Luka Dončić, and Mark Cuban’s role in the choice. Finally, he highlights the racism that Jeremy Lin, one of the few Asian American stars in the 2010’s, faced from fellow players.…
