‘Songs Inside’ is a compelling feature-length documentary that chronicles the transformative journey of a small group of women from the Adelaide Women’s Prison who, over six months, discovered the healing power of music. As the creative process unfolds, it unearths profound struggles with trauma and addiction, demonstrating that even within the complexities of prison life, music can serve as a universal force for healing and hope. Led by Barkindji singer-songwriter Nancy Bates, their journey culminates in a historic performance—the largest concert ever staged within an Australian prison—featuring the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and an audience of over 200 inmates and special guests. Phil chats to Shalom Almond about the film, it's creation and its inclusion in the Sydney Film festival. https://www.songsinside.com.au/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.…

Overnights with Phil O'Neil

Phil is joined by Chris Foster-Ramsay, Finance & Money Expert, Founder of Foster Ramsay Finance, who explains that "there are pros and cons to paying your mortgage off in full.” “Leaving a small amount in your mortgage account means you can easily access additional funds without going through the usual 50-question bank rigmarole. Your home loan is potentially the cheapest credit you’ll ever get access to, so paying off loans incurring high interest rates first is smart,” Chris says. “The downside to not paying off your mortgage in full is that you’ll continue to pay interest. You’ll also have to pay the ongoing fees for your home loan account.” Chris says leaving a small balance in your home loan account and speaking with your broker or lender about switching to an interest only loan means you’ll potentially pay a minimal amount each month, but if life serves you a curveball, and it undoubtedly will, you can easily use the equity in your home.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.…

Phil speaks with Professor Aiden Warren, US Political Expert, School of Global, Urban & Social Studies, RMIT University, about whether the Trump-Musk Big Beautiful Bromance truly over? "The only surprise about the very public and bitter end to the unlikely bromance between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, is that it took this long to implode", says Professor Warren. Both men wield enormous power in their respective spheres of influence, both have huge egos, and both have their own social media platforms to disseminate their opinions and to sling arrows, in real-time. For Trump, Musk’s threat to “fire all politicians who betrayed the American people” in next year’s midterm elections will be concerning him and the Republican party who have revelled in his past support. For Musk, the fallout will mostly be financial, with billions of dollars of government contracts on the line, and Tesla shares in freefall after the feud exploded online. What happens next between Trump and Musk? Will there be a reconciliation or is the bromance well and truly over? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.…

Phil speaks with Dr Sarah Austin, Senior Lecturer in Theatre, Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, about a new theatrical production of The Birds, a vivid, thrilling and ghastly: new theatrical adaptation of The Birds which evokes climate disaster, terrorism and lockdown Malthouse’s new production of The Birds is a thrillingly realised take on the 1952 short story by Daphne Du Maurier. Adapted by Louise Fox and directed by Matthew Lutton, this vivid realisation is a chilling treatise on fear and resilience in the face of an external threat. Paula Arundell plays Tessa, a wife and mother whose family has recently undergone a seachange to a sleepy little coastal town. Tessa serves as both our narrator and key storyteller as the show unfolds, and Arundell embodies multiple other characters with precise vocal and physical shifts. As the birds start to amass on the sleepy seaside hamlet, Tessa becomes increasingly concerned about their intentions. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.…
