I recognised Davey because I'd seen his face on TV - a 3 time contestant on the reality TV show The Bachelor, he'd spent his teens, 20's and early 30's partying hard as an archetypical modern male. Chasing girls, doing lots of cocaine and any other addiction to provide a short term boost. But behind the visage, he knew he was covering some deeper issues and after literally dying and coming back from the dead due to a drug induced seizure over 12 months ago, he finally realised he needed to rebuild a new life. I loved this chat, because Davey hasn't worked out what the point is anyway - but he knows that the lifestyle of his past ain't it. He's done an incredible job to stay sober over a year now and this was a raw discussion, recorded over 2 sessions, where we see him in the process of rebuilding himself. A few months ago a friend said to me that I need to reach out to this guy Greg Chacon, because he was a true unicorn in his theology with a crazy backstory. Greg lived as a gangster in his teenage years, getting kicked out of multiple schools and spending prolonged periods of time incarcerated. Then at 17 he began a journey of discover which ultimately led him to find God. In his worship of God, just like his life beforehand, he hasn't done anything in halves and is someone that you'd describe as being all in. He has a high opinion of personal experiences and despite holding to preterist eschatology where the common view on supernatural things like demons and spiritual gifts is that they ceased in 70AD, Greg has experienced and believes in things like speaking in tongues and casting out demons. He has extensive personal experience dealing with demons in exorcism situations, which to be honest is a practice that I myself am very skeptical of. In Christian circles, Greg can be quite controversial and he's never afraid of getting into a debate to reiterate his opinions. However, this was a great discussion which went on for almost 2 hours because rather than denying Greg's experiences or trying to debate him on them, I tried to get a better understanding of what he believes and in doing so I learned a lot. Whether I ended up agreeing with Greg on everything is irrelevant, but I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be blown away by the story of a man who has had a crazy journey and speaks from the heart about what he stands for. After interviewing Mesh Mesha on this podcast several weeks ago, I've been fascinated by how a Protestant Christian can become a Catholic. Catholicism gets a bad wrap in general, but as a 'Bible believing Christian' I've held a particular negative view towards the institution - having written about its deceptions and even spoken about them on this show many times. Speaking to Mesh with an open mind has made me realise that some of my presuppositions are very wrong. Now this does not mean that I am all of a sudden a Catholic, but it has forced me to reevaluate my position with a fresh perspective. Sean McMahon, therefore, was the perfect guest. He grew up more or less agnostic, with one Catholic parent and one Jewish parent. Pursuing his love of music, he spent his early 20's looking into things like mysticism and new age, before exploring his Jewish roots further and finding faith in Jesus due to his studies on the Book of Daniel. But just over a year ago, as he continued his study, he came to the view that the Catholic Church is indeed the true Church established by Jesus Christ in the first century. In 1998 Ryan Leaf was in contention to be the #1 pick in the NFL draft. In the end, Peyton Manning went 1 and Ryan Leaf went 2. Manning went on to become one of the most celebrated players in the games history, whereas Leaf was out of the game within 4 years and just over a decade later he spent several years in Montana state penitentiary. That journey of the extreme highs to extreme lows was ultimately what was required for Ryan to build himself into the person he is today. He's now a happily married father of 2, whose answer on the point of life is to devote himself to his 4. We spoke a lot about his rebuild over the past 10 years, where he has taught himself how to focus on the things he can control and learn to show extreme gratitude for all that he has - as opposed to focusing on what he doesn't. He speaks about his understand of God, and what it means to surrender to a higher power even if he can't contemplate who or what that is. Unlike most of us in the West who grow up in a predominately Christian society, Mesh grew up in the minority Coptic community in the majority Muslim country of Egypt. When she came to Australia as an adult, it was her husbands search for faith that led her to truly question what was ultimately a cultural belief system. She spent many years as a 'church nomad' and in recent years became convinced that the Catholic Church is indeed the true Church of God. Though I first became a believer within a Catholic Church, I have been a 'protestant' for most of my believing life and would consider myself 'anti-Catholic' like many other Christians who look at Rome as a counterfeit religion. In past episodes I have been openly critical of Catholicism and whilst I've never questioned the faith of many of its people, I am highly critical of the papacy and many other elements of the Church. This episode was very interesting for me, because I have gotten to know Mesh and believed many things that she did before I learned that she was Catholic. In having discussions, she has forced me to reconsider some of my presuppositions which have been influenced by culture and society. Whilst I still reject Catholicism, this was a chance to have an open and honest conversation about things where maybe what I currently believe are wrong. What's the point anyway? This podcast series aims to address this question - bringing on a range of guests from various backgrounds, all of whom have faced challenges along the way and have either arrived at, or are seeking to arrive, the answer to the question on the point of our existence. Through the depths of the covid era in 2020-21 I became disillusioned with the world and started to really ask this question myself. A staunch atheist up until that point, I ended up exploring everything and eventually came to believe that Jesus was who he said he was. I’ve now spent 3 years dealing with this complete change in world view and I’ve met and spoken with so many fascinating people in the process. A hardcore materialist in my past life, I used to be interested in who was achieving so-called success, but nowadays I’m far more interested in people that have battled addiction, contemplated suicide, lost careers or family, and come through the other side of it with far more curiosity in questioning things that actually matter. I’m not really your typical Christian or church-goer. In fact I really struggle with much of what modern Christianity projects itself as to the wider world. So far from creating a podcast that preaches to the choir, I wanted to create a platform where I can speak to a range of interesting people, Christians or not, who have pondered the question of what the point of life is and see if we can’t learn something from each other. A little bit of background for listeners - I’ve had some vigorous debates on X with Jacob’s colleague Aaron Rich. We take a completely different interpretation on what the Bible says about Israel, and that has profound implications not only for doctrine but I’d also say it’s perhaps the most significant issue in the world right now with the Israel-Palestine conflict. In this conversation, Jacob Fronczak was all too willing to join me and discuss our differences where he shares his insights on Messianic Judaism, the significance of Israel in biblical prophecy, and the hope for a better future through the resurrection and the coming of the Messiah.
