Today we talk with Christy Yerk-Smith, LPC, and we are working through a topic that may be triggering for some: Gaslighting. The episode begins with the signs and symptoms of gaslighting, including those that are considered abusive. Christy explains what gaslighting might look and sound like in session and what the role of the therapist is in these sessions. Christy discusses identifying goals in the intake session, and which ones need further exploration to assess for gaslighting or abuse. She also shares the techniques she uses to address abuse or manipulation with clients and other types of relationships where clients may encounter gaslighting. The episode wraps up with the clinical interventions Christy uses as well as community resources we may need for clients.

In this episode, I provide an in depth discussion of how I target market via social media, including selecting platforms, hashtags, and the best times to post. I also share my unique way of target marketing in the community. It may sound strange, but a hobby of mine is reading about business growth strategies. Ever since I started my practice, I scheduled time to learn about marketing, systems, organization, and business planning and growth. It has become a passion of mine, and while I am not a coach, and I don’t have a practice growth course to sell, I do love sharing what I know. As a former teacher, this is just part of who I am, and while I have been told not to give so much away for free, I truly enjoy learning from others, sharing what I’ve learned, and seeing therapists succeed. We deserve to make a good living too, and we can all success together. I’m happy to do my part and share what I've learned with you. My goal for this series is to share from one to clinician to another, the strategies and skills that I have learned through running my practice, my continuing education business, coordinating workshops with hundreds of attendees, building a community, and owning a podcast. I hope you find it helpful, and I’m glad you’re here. We all face loss. When a child dies, however, it is a particularly brutal, life-altering loss. As caring bystanders and mental health professionals, we may not know how to respond, help, or approach those who are grieving. We're worried we'll say the wrong thing and upset the grieving person, and therefore might end up doing nothing at all. Today we are joined by Anita Swartley, grief coach and Founder of Mosaic Restorative Coaching and Kristin Kane Ford, Founder of the Kellan Ford Foundation. Both have lost children to illness and both are on a mission to help others navigate grief. These two women share their inspirational, messy, heart-wrenching, yet hopeful stories. They discuss myths and misconceptions of grief as well as the grief process and the less talked about symptoms of the grief experience. Finally, they talk us through the practical experience of parenting their other children after the loss of a child and offer practical advice on the best ways to walk alongside those who are grieving. In this episode, we take an in depth look at cults. Cults have made headlines around the world for many years and continue to fascinate us through documentaries and popular podcasts. Most recently, the organization known as NXIVM gained attention for its famous members, including Allison Mack from the show Smallville. NXIVM, led by Keith Ranieri, lured members by asserting themselves as a professional development program; then, subsequently blackmailed and branded its members, and in some cases, used members as sex slaves. As therapists, we need to be aware of the red flags behind these cults, so that we can better support clients who are being manipulated into organizations that may potentially turn abusive. We will discuss how to help clients that are stuck in a cult, find their way out, and how to support families whose loved ones are trapped in. Joining us today, we have the author of CULTS Inside OUT, Rick Alan Ross.
