In episode 5 of Season Two of the Nursing Strategies for Success Podcast – I have the pleasure of speaking with Yesenia Malave, BSN, RN regarding strategies for bridging the gap in health care inequities for non-English-speaking patients. Yesenia, a Puerto Rico native and Nurse who completed her BSN in Spanish, and had to relearn everything in English, knows first-hand what it's like to face language barriers. Fast forward to 2022, and Yesenia is STILL witnessing major challenges with language barriers - especially in how healthcare services are being provided for patients who do not speak English. As a result, she is focused on completing her FNP, and then using her Nursing language and skills to better serve the Hispanic population and improve programs that focus on reducing communication barriers and improving effective communication in healthcare!
