The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks two of the founders of the new improv festival in Montreal “Le Grand Yes And!” Lucie Gee and Costa Tsimiklis: “What would your last meal on earth be?” That question was asked by Julie Santini back in episode 320 . Le Grand Yes And! is the latest festival in a city famed for its festivals. Festival organizers Lucie Gee & Costa Tsimiklis (along with Victor Neves Borges) have decided that not only does Montreal deserve an improv festival, it deserves to have a bilingual improv festival. Le Grand Yes And will feature 15 shows and 10 workshops for lovers of improv comedy at all levels. There’s even a few shows that feature our old pal Mariana Vial ! Lucie and Costa joined Sarah and I at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about Le Grand Yes And, what prompted them to get on stage and of course because this is a show hosted by me: Hollow Knight: Silksong. Having acted and improvised before she’s recently taken to the stage alone as a stand up comedy and is currently honing her craft all over town. Back in 2016 we were lucky enough to sit down with (then) up and coming indie wrestler Speedball Mike Bailey, back in town after some successful runs in PWG and AAA. Mike was about to be defending his IWS World Title against former WWE Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr. at Metropolis. Now they’re a regular on AEW! They challenged the Hurt Syndicate at All-In Texas for the AEW World Tag Team Titles in front of like 30,000 people. That’s crazy man, crazy. Fair warning, the audio levels are a little off-balanced for the first few minutes, but it normalizes pretty quickl Anyhow, enjoy this trip down memory lane, I’m on vacation this week. The people asked “Where is that comedy festival that takes place at Hurley’s?” Well, our dear friends at the World’s Smallest Comedy Night heard the people. The World’s Smallest Comedy Festival is back for the third edition! World’s Smallest Comedy Festival 3 starts August 11 and runs all the way through until August 18. There are at least 15 shows that you can check out. Walter, Chris and Lawrence are on this one and it descends pretty quickly into mayhem as a result. All three of these wonderful comedians will be popping up all over the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival but if you want a special treat you should head over to Hurley’s at 10 pm on August 12 for “ Look Who’s Talking ” which will feature both Go Plug Yourself’s own Chris Venditto and Lawrence Corber up on stage being some of the best crowd work comedians in the city. Just who IS Erik Intrevado? Well, he’s one of the up and coming comedy producers in Montreal and he happened to run a show at a little place you may have heard of called the Peel Pub. You may have heard the news that after 60 years of being in business the Peel Pub suddenly closed its door this past weekend . Peel Pub closing left people out of work, a lot of people owed money and Erik without a venue for his open mic night (not to mention some of his gear is currently locked up inside of the building with no certainty of ever being returned). Walter, Troy and I set up at the back of a bar that ISN’T going anywhere (our beloved Grumpy’s) to talk with Erik Intrevado about producing comedy shows, condo conspiracy theories and trying to figure out just what is becoming of the fair city of Montreal. But fear not good listener – Erik Intrevado is currently doing his best to land on his feet! I think it’s no surprise that both Sarah and I are pretty big fans of investigative journalism in one form or another. From my college years poring over exposés in VICE to our more recent obsessions with deep-dive audio investigations we’ve been avid supporters of journalism that uncovers hard to-tell (and sometimes hard to read) stories and contextualizes them in meaningful ways. All that to say – we’ve been fans of The Rover for some time now and we’re thrilled to finally have Christopher Curtis on the show. If you’re not familiar The Rover is a Montreal based investigative journalism project that focuses on Montreal and Quebec but also turns towards Canada and the rest of the world from time to time. Honestly, they do some of the best investigative journalism you’ll read on the internet and the fact that it is local and mostly focuses on Montreal and Quebec is a nice bonus if you’re the average Go Plug Yourself listener. Every now and then Chris Venditto and I like to take an episode to catch up and talk mostly about the Montreal Canadiens and wrestling. What a better way to kick off Cowboy Summer than talking about hockey? Well this episode is that but also includes us branching out into talking about the Montreal PWHL team and Chris shares his thoughts on the absence of the Just for Laughs festival this summer in Montreal now that we’re nearly two months removed from the news and he has had a little more time to ruminate. Chris has declared the summer of 2024 to be “Cowboy Summer” (I may be paraphrasing) but when Beyoncé has released a country album and apparently everyone is listening to “A Bar Song” by Shaboozey it’s hard to deny that he might be on to something. I actually wonder if country music festivals will do better this year than the “normal” music festivals. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Boum (the comic book artist and creator of The Jellyfish ): What is something that you’re really good at that nobody knows about? That question asked by our previous guest Raquel Maestre back in episode 294 . Anyone who listens to us over on 9ES knows that I’m a huge fan of comic books. I have read a lot of comics in my time from mainstream comics to small indie zines. So it’s with at least some degree of authority that I can tell you that “The Jellyfish” by Boum is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. Sarah (who is co-hosting this episode) doesn’t read nearly as many comics as I do but she is also sometimes harder to please – so it’s a double recommendation that Sarah enjoyed “The Jellyfish” so much that she wants to re-read it again after blasting through the entire thing in a single sitting. We were extremely lucky to sit down with Boum at the back of our usual haunt Grumpy’s to talk about “The Jellyfish”, comic books, the Quebec health care system, animation and eyesight. You might know him better as “ Scott from 9ES. ” It was no surprise to me at all when I found out that Lynn was a rock n’ roll drummer back in the day and even less of a surprise when I saw she was part of an awesome band called the Taxi Girls when the debuted on the scene in 2022! Since then they’ve been all over the place, recently opening for a little band you may have heard of called NOBRO. So way back in 2012 we recorded our 8th ever episode of Go Plug Yourself with Television’s Mike Paterson to promote his Valentine’s Day comedy special that was taking place at… the name escapes me. Anyways, we were late in posting that episode because everything was a shit show back then and we didn’t have our shit together. Here we are now in 2024 with history repeating itself. We were planning on having Dan Carin on this week’s episode but apparently his computer is too old to handle our recording software. It’s been 12 years and we have learned nothing. Anyways, so this episode is sort of about a Valentine’s Day comedy night that happened 12 years ago, but it’s also about Burger King and probably wrestling. Sometimes even the best laid plans don’t come to fruition. Our plan this week was to reunite my cohosts Inés Anaya, Chris Venditto and Lawrence Corber so that we could have a roundtable catchup discussion and come up with a few new questions for our “5 Questions” segment. The plan even involved Lawrence taking the train from Missassauga into Toronto (armed with a USB microphone that I lent him over the weekend) to go to Inés’ house for better sound quality. It was a perfect plan spanning two provinces. Alas – it was not meant to be. Due to a vetrinary medical emergency we had to scramble for a backup plan. Lawrence could only record from his phone (which is why he sounds like he is recording from a phone) and we were missing a co-host. So we did what we always do: talk about wrestling. A lot has happened in wrestling over the last few weeks (do not look up why Vince McMahon is a bad man and just trust me that he is) but we decide to focus on actual in-ring discussions. It’s time for the greatest tradition in Montreal podcasting! The annual Go Plug Yourself Shit Show! Somehow this is the 9th annual version of this little Shit Show tradition we’ve got going on (we only started this somehow around episode 75 if the Go Plug Yourself historians are to be believed) and boy does it feel like even more than that. This year we play host to: Tyler Lemco, Walter Lyng, Vance Michel and Troy Stark, with Sarah and I representing the actual “host” contingent of the podcast. If you listen to this whole episode you’ll hear that Walter is considering a comeback (did he ever really leave?) somewhere around episode 300. You may recall that he semi-retired from co-hosting at episode 200 way back in 2020. Stay tuned to see if he’s a man of his word. You know the drill with these things by now. There’s no real theme. I don’t even really remember what we spoke about. I’m pretty sure at some point we are talking about fake asses though, so look forward to that. The Montreal podcast that asks Rob from the Montreal Pinball Arcade: “What is the moment that scared you the most? – That question asked by none other than Serag Meletian back in episode 289 . I’ve always been fascinated by pinball. The fact that there is a game where you have to use a pair (or more) of flippers to keep a little silver ball in play while trying your best to hit targets is pretty cool. The fact that that basic principle has been explored in hundreds of different interations over the last 5 or 6 decades is absolutely insane. Blinking lights, music and killer artwork makes each pinball machine it’s own thing, but the name of the game is mostly the same. The last ten years or so has been somewhat of a resurgance for the art of pinball and thank goodness for guys like Rob from Montreal Pinball Arcade because he’s getting more and more classic machines up and running again. Rob is one part arcade owner ( visit him Friday nights or Sunday afternoons for $15 free play ) and one part pinball mechanic ( check out Pinball Medics for parts, full machines and repairs ) and he’s turned a passion for pinball into his full time job. Once a car mechanic, Rob has taken his mechanical and electrical know-how and applied it to the fine art of restoring and maintaning pinball machines. Getting machines from the 80s and 90s back into working condition and better and faster than ever. Sarah steps in as co-host for this episode as we talk about old school arcades, working on pinball machines a little bit of heavy metal music.
