How does one be a Christian soldier? Morally against killing but also wanting to protect the lives of those you love.

There are many examples of people who have showed courage during such difficult times of war and in different ways, and today's episode is discussing one such hero...

ALVIN YORK, perhaps the greatest American hero of World War I, was born into poverty but didn’t realize it until he went off to war.

As an American soldier, Alvin’s Christian beliefs told him that killing was wrong. But when he saw his friends being mowed down by deadly machinegun fire, like the hero he was, he used his exceptional hunting skills to silently flank the enemy dug in above him on a hill. The finest marksman in his platoon, he picked off about 25 enemy officers and men, silencing their machineguns and then capturing 130 German soldiers.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor for saving his platoon in the pivotal Battle of Meuse-Argonne.

But what Alvin York’s service teaches us today, I believe, goes beyond his heroism. For this young man provided the moral logic for us why we must fight tyranny and stand up for the vulnerable and oppressed. In the end, Sergeant York presented to the world the Creed of the American Warrior.

I’m Rick Robison and this is the HEROES FOR FREEDOM Podcast.
