Last week state lawmakers finally passed a state budget, which was due on April 1. Most of the holdup was due to various non-budget items that the Governor wanted included in the deal - rolling back discovery reforms, expanding involuntary commitment’ and criminalizing mask-wearing in public. Hochul and legislative leaders did eventually agree on compromises on these issues and then turned their attention to the actual budget itself. We discussed affordability, taxes, housing, education, and climate.

Hundreds Make Last Minute Push for NY HEAT 13:38

Hundreds of climate activists gathered outside the State Assembly on Thursday, June 5, to urge lawmakers to pass the NY Heat Act. The bill would align the policies of state agencies with the climate measures included in the CLCPA, the state’s climate law, including ending the massive subsidy involved in providing free gas hookups if within 100 feet of an existing gas line. It would also cap the utility bills of low-income New Yorkers at 6% of their income. In recent days lawmakers have floated the idea of amending the bill to allow utilities to opt out in order to deal with the opposition of National Fuels in Western NY which only provides gas. On June 4, Beyond Plastics organized a news conference to support the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act and to respond to lobbying from the chemical and plastics industry, which is attempting to mislead environmental justice communities in order to protect their own profits. The Capital Region protested outside Albany Airport on May 31st, engaging in a National Day of Action against Avelo Airlines which operates flights out of Albany International Airport and is contracted with the Trump Administration to deport and help disappear the people that ICE has been kidnapping and sending to foreign gulags.
