🎯 “Winning = Fun”? Not So Fast.

I walked into a locker room and saw this poster:
➡️ “Why do we play? To have fun. What makes it fun? Winning. So let’s win, win, win, and win some more.”

But here’s the problem: Fun doesn’t mean the same thing to every athlete.

Research shows that while fun is the #1 reason athletes play, winning is just one of many ingredients. Things like trying hard, improving, team connection, and game excitement matter just as much—often more.

💡 Great coaches don’t impose their own definition of fun—they get to know each player’s why and create an environment that nurtures it.

Volleyball legend Gabby Reece reveals a fundamental principle that transformed her career: the crucial difference between worry and care. Worry is paralyzing and unproductive. It's that anxious tug about things you can't control—outcomes, opinions, "what ifs." It drains your energy and pulls you away from the present. Care, on the other hand, is all about action, internal drive, and principles. It's channeling your energy into what you can control: your preparation, effort, attitude, and integrity. Gabby asks herself: "What is within my sphere of influence, and how can I bring my best to that?" This distinction is a game-changer for any athlete or leader: Worry about performance? Shift to caring about consistent effort and skill refinement. Worry about criticism? Shift to caring about your internal standards and values. Worry about outcomes? Shift to caring about execution and maximum effort. Choosing care over worry reclaims your mental energy, ignites your purpose, and frees you to perform with passion, not fear.…

As coaches, we love our meticulously crafted plans. But what happens when reality throws a curveball? This clip shares the brilliant example of the classic ice rink scene in Rocky. Originally planned with hundreds of extras, budget constraints forced a pivot. The result? A far more intimate and powerful moment filmed in an empty rink. This isn't just movie magic—it's a powerful lesson for leaders. The most impactful coaching moments often aren't from your perfectly laid plans, but from your ability to adapt and innovate when the unexpected hits. Embrace adaptability. Be present, be courageous enough to let go of the rigid plan, and be creative enough to find a new, often better, path forward. That's where true coaching magic happens! What's a time you had to pivot your plan, and it led to a better outcome? That teammate who's just not pulling their weight? We've all been there. It's easy to get stuck in frustration, labeling them "lazy" or "unmotivated." But what if there's more to the story? 🤔 I recently worked with a college captain, Alex, who was completely exasperated by a teammate, Jamie. Instead of judgment, I challenged Alex to take a heroic perspective of Jamie – to consider why her behavior might make sense from her point of view. This isn't about excusing behavior; it's about seeing the person behind the behavior. When Alex shifted her perspective, new avenues opened for empathy, curiosity, and genuine support. The result? A path to real connection and positive change. Ready to transform frustration into possibility? Try seeing your teammates through a heroic lens. #CoachingTips #AuthenticLeadership #PlayerConnection #TimelessWisdom #SportsLeadership…

We talk about gratitude, but how do you truly embed it in a high-performance culture? Former England Rugby coach Stuart Lancaster had a profoundly simple, yet brilliant, idea that changed everything. 🏉 He asked players' parents to write to their sons, expressing what it meant to see them play for England. Then, he took it a step further, asking parents to identify five key people who helped their son's journey, and had those people write back too. Imagine elite athletes reading these deeply personal letters aloud to their teammates. This wasn't about tactics; it was about context. It cut through ego, fostering profound gratitude and reminding every player that no one achieves greatness alone. Want to shift your team's perspective and deepen their purpose? Try embracing this powerful simplicity. #Gratitude #HighPerformance #TeamCulture #LeadershipLessons #Rugby…

The tragic 1949 Mann Gulch fire offers a chilling lesson for every leader. 🔥 A team of highly trained smokejumpers, equipped with over 40 rules, tragically perished not from the fire itself, but from an inability to adapt when those rules became obsolete. Organizational psychologist Karl E. Weick's analysis reveals the danger of drowning in your own rulebook. This story powerfully illustrates a key point from my book, The Culture System : the critical difference between having vital standards and a paralyzing list of rules. Instead of a sprawling rulebook, empower your team with 3-5 core standards that act as a compass, not an anchor. Think "Full Effort" or "Talk and Touch" – foundational values that guide action without stifling adaptability. What are your team's core standards? Let me know below! 👇 #LeadershipLessons #TeamCulture #MannGulch #OrganizationalPsychology #TheCultureSystem…
