How To Distinguish The Voice Of God

“Is not my word like fire, says the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” -Jeremiah

23:29

In this section of Jeremiah, the people were being led astray by false prophecy. In other words they were being told what they wanted to hear instead of what they needed to hear.

The solution proposed to this isn’t to silence or even argue with them or their words. In fact it was just the opposite. “Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream…” (verse 28) The solution is for us to discern the truth.

A fire gives us light to see. A fire warms us and protects us in the cold. A refiner’s fire, the hands of a skilled and capable refiner makes that which being refined more pure, more beautiful, and more useful. In other words a true word of God sustains and encourages us through the difficult times. And while extremely uncomfortable at times, it guides and cultivates us into becoming the best versions of ourselves.

Why would someone smash rock with a hammer? There are at least two reasons that are valid here. First is to expose and release the gold and or crystal inside. A second possible reason is to shape the rock into a sculpture or into jewelry. In other words, while uncomfortable at times it carefully brings out the best in us.

A true word of God is not harsh, reckless or vindictive. It is never demeaning or destructive. It is usually extremely uncomfortable for us. It requires and compels us to change into a better version of ourselves through a focus on ourselves.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
