Listen for the Silence

“Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind, and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake, and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire, and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.” - from 1 Kings 19:11-12

Elijah was in trouble. He had been faithful. He had been consistent in doing all the right things for a long time. Nevertheless, his life was on the line. They were literally coming for him and he didn’t know what to do next. So he sought guidance on what to do next.

But he couldn’t hear God in the chaos and confusion. He couldn’t hear God in the noise. God was in the silence.

Sometimes like Elijah, we find ourselves in bad situations through no fault of our own and we don’t know what to do. We have to get away from the noise and confusion. We have to quiet the voices of fear, anger, and doubt screaming in our own heads.

It is only then that we hear God. God is in the silence. Listen for the silence.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
