He grew up listening to hunting stories whispered over coffee before sunrise—stories that sparked a fire. But Josh Grace’s path into the woods wasn’t paved with privilege. When 9/11 shut down firearm season on Florida’s military reservation, his dad handed him a $90 youth bow from Kmart and said, “Figure it out, and I’ll take you hunting.” That moment launched a lifetime of public land grit.

Originally from Niceville, Florida, Josh is now a veteran law enforcement officer based in Alabama. Between overseeing patrol units and SWAT teams, he’s chasing Easterns, Rios, and whitetails across state lines. In this episode, he talks with Mitchell about everything from missing deer for five straight years to harvesting his first turkey solo—and why the thrill of the hunt still humbles him every season.

Josh shares how the pursuit of a Grand Slam has taken him to Oklahoma’s sagebrush hills and Florida’s pressured swamps. He reflects on the evolution of hunting culture, the pressure of social media, and the lessons passed down by his father. Whether it’s dodging yellow jackets, climbing trees at twelve, or laughing over a miss caught on camera, Josh brings an authenticity that reminds us why we started.

This episode is for the hunter still figuring it out, the one who’s missed more than he’s hit, and the one who knows that every sunrise in the stand is a story worth telling.
