Welcome to Episode 13: James Upchurch – Building Homes and Communities with Kindness. In this episode we are bridging the gap with our special guest James Upchurch, owner of Contour Construction Group who takes a servant’s heart approach to building homes for people and his community.

Who is James Upchruch
James was born in Tacoma, WA and graduated with a degree in Business from the University of Washington. Go Huskies! He first met Ryan 18 years ago at his wedding. Ryan was invited by James’ father in-law.
Work History
James got his start selling T-shirts out of his fraternity with his business partner at the time. That grew and scaled into a national branding company where his biggest account was Alaska Airlines. His company had over 200 employees and warehouses all over the United States and grew his company into a $55 million per year company. In 2019 James decided to completely change gears and follow his passions for construction and got into home remodels and spec builds. Him and his business partner own Contour Construction Group.
Current Projects
Currently he has a few custom spec home builds going on and they are also breaking ground on a multifamily project in Kitsap county. They also have some upcoming short plat projects for entry level spec home builds.
Ideal Home Build?
James has shared with us that his ideal home build is the entry level spec home projects. What he likes about these projects is the predictability of the timelines and costs and the scalability of these projects. It’s not that they are necessarily easier but it allows him and his partner to get into a work flow state where he feels he is optimizing his time to help more people.
Tips for Buyers wanting to find land to build on
Be prepared for it to cost a lot more than you think. Acquiring land is just the beginning. Before you even break ground there is the geotechnical engineering reports, environmental studies and design work that all have to go into a project before you even break ground and once that is done then you have to go through the permitting process with your local municipality. Dealing with county inspectors can be a challenge and that is where being kind to people really pays off. It is a lot easier to attract flies with honey than it is vinegar.
Final thoughts
James is a lover of people and truly leads with a servant’s heart in his business. What James has found is if you are kind to people and be a good listener, you are really able to help them and have a positive impact in their lives. Homeowner’s going through a custom home build run the gambit of emotions and by being a good listener and being kind to them as well as his subcontractors, he has learned that he and his team are able to have a positive and lasting impact on the communities in which they build.
