Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. Journalist Katie Toth has been working on a project that links together multiple elements of her personal life and the world at large as we see it today. It's a journey that started with her move to Canada's subarctic, and it's a perspective that is easily missed. For so many, everything changed when Russia invaded Ukraine. It also shifted what is happening in the far North as we know it. We'll learn more about this unique "Cold Front" Toth has unravelled, and explore identity and geopolitics in this special episode.…
Expressing who you are through what and how you create is not necessarily a natural skill. São Paolo guests, Inès Schinazi and Dani Afonso, however, have it down to a science. The life and business partners are the creators of the Brazilian podcast drama series, "Chloé & Valentina," which they made, in part, for the sake of the female-led narrative. But who they really are runs deeper. Join us as we explore what being "100% Brazilian" means, how a hyphenated identity can be challenging, and what life is like in the Southern hemisphere.…
"Sinon, je chante et je joue du piano," ("Besides that, I sing and play piano") reads Beatrice Martin's Instagram bio. This is a true reflection of her humility; especially when held up against internationally sold-out shows, a six-album career, and a legendary presence on almost all social media platforms for over a decade. Best known as Cœur de Pirate, she's French, she's Canadian, she's a pop star, she's queer, she's a mom, she's acquired a company...and yes, she sings and plays piano, too. It is impossible to put Martin in a box with all of these identifiers and colours to her shining star quality. She joins us to talk about it this week on a special episode of anticulture.…

Said M'Dahoma, better known as "The Pastry Nerd" is a French-Comorian - but wait, what does that mean?
