In this episode, Oliver Cronk talks with Ron Kersic about "Futuring Architectures" and how architects can navigate today's rapidly changing digital landscape. Ron, a self-described "recovering programmer" now at ING's Tech Strategy group, discusses his journey from early programming to enterprise architecture. He explains his concept of "Futuring Architectures for Sustaining Transitions" (FAST) and why he rejects traditional "target states" in favor of a "cone of possibilities" approach. Key topics include: Ecosystem thinking beyond organisational boundaries AI's transformative impact on technology creation The changing role of architects in navigating uncertainty Systems thinking and sustainability across technological and natural ecosystems The need for diversity in architecture teams Connect with Ron Kersic on LinkedIn to learn more about Futuring Architectures: https://nl.linkedin.com/in/ronkersicand get involved in the Architect Tomorrow community through LinkedIn by following Oliver: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/cronky and using the hashtag #ArchitectTomorrowResources MentionedKevin Kelly's concept of the "Technium" - technology acting as an organism that evolves and emerges https://kk.org/thetechnium/Stuart Brand's pace layers - different systems changing at different speedshttps://jods.mitpress.mit.edu/pub/issue3-brand/release/2Magnus Lindkvist's work on futuring - exploring the cone of uncertainty concepthttps://www.magnuslindkvist.com/Episode of Beyond the Hype on Agentic AI:https://blog.scottlogic.com/2025/04/15/beyond-the-hype-should-fully-autonomous-ai-agents-be-developed.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Horizonshttps://substack.com/@futuringarchitectures#enterprisearchitecture #DigitalTransformation #FuturingArchitectures #AI #Sustainability #EcosystemThinking…

Penny Townsend and Oliver recap 2023 in 20 minutes, covering a range of topics (naturally including AI which is one prediction we definitely got right last time around!), but also data, working patterns, sustainability and more. We look at what we got right and wrong (also using some assistance from Claude.ai) from our previous predictions for 2023 video which you can find here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBgxc_qdGZU (and also on the audio Architect Tomorrow podcast). So what do transformation leaders and technology architects need to be thinking about as we move into 2024? What can be planned for / pre-empted? What trends do we see continuing? What will change? Less uncertainty than before? More coming in the next episode that will land in early January but this gives you a starting point. Here are the longer summaries that I mentioned on the call but didn't talk through all of: So as I said amusingly (given how much we talked about the impact of GenAI in 2023!) I’ve got the pro version of Claude to create a summary of what we covered last year (and also to recap some wikipedia content about 2023 as well: The key technology predictions made by the panellists included: A continued focus on large language models like GPT-3 and the need to address issues around intellectual property, education, and ethics related to AI. Increased consideration of sustainability in technology decisions, but a lack of concrete data and standardised metrics to truly measure impact. Risk of superficial "greenwashing" without these. Potential refocusing on some technology basics like open source software, data management, and integration amid the hype around concepts like the metaverse and web3. Legacy systems presenting growing costs and security risks that may finally drive some modernization in 2023 after years of deferral. An explosion of APIs requiring more API management discipline and event-driven architectural approaches to rationalise and integrate APIs. Greater constraints on resources (financial, labour, geopolitical) forcing a ruthlessness and focus on efficiency in technology spending and making companies show their "true colours". So in summary, a mix of revisiting some technology fundamentals while also addressing emerging issues like sustainability and the responsible use of AI. AI and Large Language Models Discussion around intellectual property, education, and ethical considerations with the rise of models like GPT-3. Potential need to rethink IP laws, fair use, and what skills should be focused on in education. Sustainability Growing consideration of sustainability in technology, but gaps remain around concrete data and measurement. Risk of "greenwashing" without standardized ESG metrics. Climate change driving very real business impacts that may spur change. People and Culture The "great resignation" and its effect on the workforce. Concerns around inequality, mental health, purpose and trust in public institutions. Predictions around increased constraints financially and on resources in 2023. Technology Hype around concepts like metaverse and web3 vs refocusing on technology basics like open source, data, integration. Legacy system costs and security risks driving some modernization. API explosion requiring more API management and event driven approaches. Technology Advances in AI lead to major international summit at Bletchley Park on managing risks. But deepfake audio and imagery also starts being used in harassment and scams. NHS COVID tracing app is discontinued. Vaccines become available commercially with age limits raised. Business Multiple retailers like Wilko go into administration leading to store closures and job losses. But some brands get rescued or reopen. Strikes heavily impact sectors like rail, leading to deal between Do look out for the next episode!…

#ArchitectTomorrow community returns for the traditional 2 part look back and look ahead for the 3rd year running! This is a very natural unscripted honest conversation across tech, business and society about the year we've just had. We look back at 2022 in review - considering what predictions we got right and wrong, what was unexpected and what were the stand out tech changes we experienced. What has stood out to each of us individually and within our business this year. We including things such as the first practical applications of Quantum technologies, Event Driven Architecture and Cloud hitting their stride, experiments with metaverse and of course AI and ML gets quite a lot of discussion. Sally Pritchard - an Architect Tomorrow regular also returns for the 3rd time and Tom returns from the 2021 predictions video. Emma Taylor the founder of Chief Disruptor joins alongside regular host Oliver Cronk now the Technology Director at Scott Logic Last year we asked if predictions are dead. A case in point of this is we would never have imagined there would be a significant war in Europe. This has been heart-breaking but it has also created the biggest shocks and knock on impacts of the year. Added to labour challenges this has pushed us into energy price fuelled inflation. Which in turn is getting us all to think about our energy usage a lot more. Do join the discussion on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12351004/…
