Like peace, man! It’s the start of summer, so that always mean we remember the “Summer of Love,” which took place way back in 1967. It was the moment that hippie went mainstream, and a lot of young men grew their hair long and some women shed their bras…until that got too uncomfortable. The Monterey Pop Festival, which took place from June 16-18, 1967, was the starting gate, and however you remember the hippie movement, you have to admit that the festival lineup was killer: Simon & Garfunkel, the Animals, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Buffalo Springfield, Jimi Hendrix, the Who. I could go on and on. Scott Shea’s latest article for the Strange Brew breaks down the winners and losers from Monterey Pop and, henceforth, the Summer of Love.
