I think you could probably go back and track the stages of grief, probably that is what I went through. But I think if you do it right, you end up at acceptance. And that's where I ended up. And that's not to say that I've fully accepted the idea that the golden toad is extinct. Personally, I do still hold out hope that it could still be out there in those forests." - Trevor Ritland This conversation is with Trevor Ritland, who—along with his twin brother Kyle—authored The Golden Toad . The book chronicles their remarkable journey into Costa Rica’s cloud forest, once home to hundreds of brilliant golden toads that would emerge for just a few weeks each year—until, one day, they vanished without a trace. What began as a search for a lost species soon became something much more profound: a confrontation with ecological grief, a meditation on hope, and a powerful call to protect the natural world while we still can. We mostly hear from people who have had a concussion months to years ago who are still struggling with symptoms. They always tell us, I wish that I had come across this information earlier and I wouldn’t be in this situation right now. The current scientific research demonstrates that between 30-40% of people who suffer a concussion will still be suffering symptoms 1 month later and many will still have symptoms at 6 months. The major reasons why some patients suffer from persistent symptoms and others don’t is becoming more widely known - THE GOOD NEWS is that once you know these, you can use them to your advantage! This episode is for those who have JUST recently suffered a concussion and want to start off on the right foot to recover as quickly as possible. Using the strategies we discuss in this episode are the same ways that Complete Concussion Management clinics have been able to keep the number of patients with symptoms after 1 month down to less than 5%. Please share this if you know someone who has just suffered a concussion so that they can implement these strategies and avoid long-term issues. My colleagues and I started the Concussion Fix program when the pandemic first hit as a way of offering an extremely low-cost virtual concussion care service that would be accessible to people all around the world. After 2 years we have helped more than 2000 patients with long-standing post-concussion syndrome - sometimes as long as 7+ years - to fully recover from their concussions and get their lives back. In this episode, we asked a handful of former Concussion Fix members to join us to talk about their injury, their recovery, and their experience with the Concussion Fix program and how it helped them to get back to work, family, friends, sports, and life. If you are struggling with long-standing concussion symptoms that are just not getting better, consider joining the Concussion Fix program and hundreds of other concussion survivors who are recovering every day with this program! https://concussiondoc.io/offer/the-concussion-fix/ For previous podcast episodes, visit: https://completeconcussions.com/resources/ask-concussion-doc/ CONCUSSION EDUCATION PROGRAMS: Healthcare Practitioners: https://completeconcussions.com/services-courses/healthcare-practitioners/become-a-clinic/ Coaches/Trainers/Teachers: https://completeconcussions.com/services-courses/sports-schools/ Follow us! www.completeconcussions.com www.instagram.com/completeconcussions www.facebook.com/completeconcussions twitter.com/ccmconcussions DISCLAIMER This is not intended as a substitute for the medical advice of doctors and/or healthcare professionals. Why do some people get better in a week while others take months to years? PCS” is the acronym that was originally assigned to Post-Concussion Syndrome which was defined as having 3 or more concussion-related symptoms 1 to 3 months or more after a concussion injury. The term Post-Concussion Syndrome was replaced a few years ago with “Persistent Concussion Symptoms” and more recently by “Prolonged Concussion Symptoms”. In any case, the acronym remains: P.C.S. Anyone who has struggled with PCS or knows someone who has knows how difficult this condition can be. We are often told by healthcare professionals that there is no treatment for this condition other than TIME. Recent research over the past decade however has uncovered a lot of new information regarding the CAUSES and TREATMENTS of this complex condition. In part 1 of this two part series we break down the CAUSES of persistent concussion symptoms. In part 2 we will discuss the treatments. Concussion is treatable. If you or someone you know is suffering with PCS, we hope this information will provide some guidance and hope to continue pushing on. If you’d like additional support in your recovery, check out our Concussion Fix program where we dive deep into each of these concepts and teach you how to take control of your recovery in a controlled and evidence-based way! https://concussiondoc.io/offer/the-concussion-fix/ Check out what our members have to say about the Concussion Fix program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spilp6qLPac&t=0s For previous podcast episodes, visit: https://completeconcussions.com/resources/ask-concussion-doc/ CONCUSSION EDUCATION PROGRAMS: Healthcare Practitioners: https://completeconcussions.com/services-courses/healthcare-practitioners/become-a-clinic/ Coaches/Trainers/Teachers: https://completeconcussions.com/services-courses/sports-schools/ Follow us! www.completeconcussions.com www.instagram.com/completeconcussions www.facebook.com/completeconcussions twitter.com/ccmconcussions DISCLAIMER This is not intended as a substitute for the medical advice of doctors and/or healthcare professionals. Baseline testing is the concept of testing athletes on their mental and physical abilities prior to the season. The results of these tests can be valuable if an athlete sustains a concussion during the sports season as tests can be re-administered to determine the level of impairment and whether an athlete has fully recovered and is safe to return to their sport. In this episode we cover the latest evidence on baseline testing, how to find a good baseline test, and some of the controversies. Prior to age 25 males seem to suffer a greater number of concussions presumably due to greater participation in contact sports, however, after age 25 and every age group after, females suffer concussion injuries in greater numbers. Even in young athletes when we look at sex comparable sports where the rules are the same for both boys and girls (i.e., basketball, soccer, rugby, etc.) we see that girls tend to suffer concussions at a rate of 1.5x that of males. Not only that, women tend to also take longer to recover. In this episode Dr. Marshall sits down with Dr. Paul Hrkal, to discuss concussions in women and everything from risk factors, to hormones, to menstrual cycles, menopause, and persistent concussion symptoms. In this episode 75 of Ask Concussion Doc, Dr. Cameron Marshall goes in depth with the biomechanics of a concussion. A concussion was often described as a bruising of the brain, but a new theory suggests that it's actually a stretching or a shearing of the brain causing an ion exchange. Once the brain cells have been stretched to a significant degree, it causes the ions inside and outside the pores on the membrane of each cell to exchange with one another therefore causing an excitation of the impacted brain cells. It then leads to the brain going through what is called an action potential and is what causes people to go unconscious or "see stars".
