The research shows that hospitals and surgery centers are losing money on retinal detachment repair, leading many to limit emergency cases. As a result, more patients are being funneled to academic centers, which can create barriers to timely care. Drs. Murray and Thompson explore the increasing reliance on academic centers for emergency cases and the need for policy changes to maintain high-quality retinal care.
