William Russ Pugh gave the first anaesthetic in Australia. In his honour, The Australian Society of Anaesthetists' Pugh Award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of anaesthesia, intensive care or related discipline.

Who better to receive this award than Prof Colin Royse, clinician, researcher, educator extraordinaire! Prof Royse shares with me the challenges and insights from his distinguished research career including his interesting thoughts on what it takes to be a pioneer.
