Welcome to the very first Autotelic Arts Podcast. This is a conversational podcast where I invite guests on who are working in creative domains to come and talk about their creative processes, motivation, thoughts and ideas as a way of getting to understand how and why they do what they do. My first guest is Alon Ilsar, a Sydney based drummer, composer, sound designer, as well as an inventor of an instrument called the AirSticks. Alon has played in countless bands including The Sticks, Ground Patrol, Gauche, Faulkland, Darth Vegas to name but a few, as well as being involved in theatre and circus shows. (Tracks played in podcast listed at bottom). In this episode we talk about- the AirSticks instrument and Alon's audio/visual experience 'The Hour'; improvising and recording with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas); active listening of music with intentional shifts in perception; the rhythmic concept of 'morphing'; the mathematical relationship between rhythm and pitch; and incorporating theatrical elements to create a unique space for the band and audience.... and more!!! Yay.
