Everyone wants to climb the social ladder, but no one wants to look back down. This Calafia episode delves into the experiences of low-income college students at prestigious universities, exploring how upward social mobility poses unique financial, social, and emotional challenges to those fortunate enough to obtain it. By assessing interviews from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and reviewing current public policy, Sasha Velasquez urges the acknowledgement and support of need-based resources and institutions.

Calafia Fellows are selected every year from each yli office to create and edit the issue’s theme and the stories presented. They are also mentored by experienced reporters, travel to statewide and national media conferences, and learn the steps to producing a printed publication.
