Main Topic: Monster Mash #11 ORCS & More!
Orcs, goblins, bugbears, hobgoblins, kobolds, and gnolls through the editions.
Some say they are misunderstood. Some say they are stand-ins for the “other”. Honest research into the origins of our shared hobby will reveal that these monsters, for monsters they are without doubt, are formed from bits and pieces of myth and legend and glued together with the imaginings of Gygax and company, and tempered by the literary greats such as Tolkien and Lovecraft. Neither nuance nor depth was not given to these vile creatures as they serve the game as opponents to the player characters.
Torn from real-world myth, these bestial humanoids have served as in-game punching bags for decades. Created by demons, these inherently evil villains serve to sow chaos and destruction on the side of darkness generally opposed by humanity and its allies. The embodiment of all of our worst sins, these can remind us of real-world monsters giving us a way, in game, to struggle against and hopefully to defeat them.
Though some details have changed though the years and editions, the essence has changed little. The possible exception is in recent years in the newest edition with its slack-jawed adherence to ideological inclusivity. Barring the more recent silliness the general structure is:
Orc: The foot soldiers
Goblin/Kobold: Small vicious tricksters
Hobgoblin/Bugbear/Gnolls: larger enforcers/leaders/scouts
Also discussed: The humanoids’ place in an ecology and alternate takes on the foes.
Cabin Con is Upon Us
Randy: (2) 13th age games:
Level 7 “Nimielle’s Hope (The Egg)” Campaign Continues.
Level 1: Into the Great Wide Open
- Shared campaign “rules” - 1) can only level @ CC and 2) level every 3 sessions.
Deadlands “mega-adventure”: for a posse of 4-5 Seasoned characters
Joe may do a sandbox/use our incomplete Dungeon23 materials
