A secret field that summons lightning. A massive spiral that disappears into a salt lake. A celestial observatory carved into a volcano. Meet the wild—and sometimes explosive—world of land art, where artists craft masterpieces with dynamite and bulldozers. In our Season 2 premiere, guest Dylan Thuras, cofounder of Atlas Obscura, takes us off road and into the minds of the artists who literally reshaped parts of the Southwest. These works aren’t meant to be easy to reach—or to explain—but they just might change how you see the world. Land art you’ll visit in this episode: - Double Negative and City by Michael Heizer (Garden Valley, Nevada) - Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson (Great Salt Lake, Utah) - Sun Tunnels by Nancy Holt (Great Basin Desert, Utah) - Lightning Field by Walter De Maria (Catron County, New Mexico) - Roden Crater by James Turrell (Painted Desert, Arizona) Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.…

The week commencing 5th September 2022 will go down as one of the most memorable - and historically significant - in recent British history. On the Monday, we found out who would be the next Prime Minister. On the Tuesday, both the outgoing and incoming PM's met with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to carry out the required formalities in this changing of the guard. Liz Truss' appointment as political leader was overshadowed when a mere 2 days later, the Queen herself passed away, bringing to a close a truly historic 70-year reign as Britain's head-of-state. Chris discusses his thoughts on these 7 days, some of the often-overlooked societal impacts will be, whilst also touching on just some of the world events that occurred during Queen Elizabeth's life on the throne. To commemorate the recent first anniversary of the attraction's launch, in this episode Chris features the impeccable immersive House of Frankenstein, situated in the centre of Bath. Over the years, it has seldom been acknowledged that Mary Shelley wrote much of her groundbreaking novel in the city itself, giving the House of Frankenstein even more importance of its own, as the first attraction of its kind to pay homage to Shelley. This episode features highlights from Chris' interview with co-creators Jonathan Willis & Chris Harris, recorded last year for Dead Men Talk. For further information on what lies within the House of Frankenstein, where to find them and to book tickets, be sure to visit www.houseoffrankenstein.com or on their social media: Facebook: @HouseofFrankensteinBath Instagram: @houseoffrankenstein_bath Twitter: @Frankensteinbth To hear or watch the full interview, check it out on Dead Men Talk (Season 3, Episode 3) available on YouTube, Amazon, Spotify and all major podcast platforms. In this episode, Chris takes a look at the legend of 'The Chained Oak' near the village of Alton, in Staffordshire. Around 1821, it is believed that the Earl of Shrewsbury fell victim to a beggar woman’s curse after he shunned her appeal for charity whilst he travelled home to Alton one night. ‘The Chained Oak’ tree still stands as a symbol of this legend. In 2000, Alton Towers theme park adopted their own take on the story in their newest attraction at the time – ‘Hex: The Legend of The Towers’. Dartmoor has it's own rich history and folklore, and in what will likely be the first of many episodes exploring this we visit two of the most well-known locations. At Hound Tor you can visit and explore the remains of a medieval village, once a homestead to six households, which mysteriously became deserted by the 15th Century. And just down the road, you can find the crossroads grave-site of the tragic Kitty Jay, with its own mysterious happening which still occurs to this day. In 1545, Tudor England was facing seemingly insurmountable odds as the French fleet gathered off the coast of the Isle of Wight, ready to invade. King Henry VIII sent his somewhat smaller naval fleet into battle, led by his treasured flagship The Mary Rose. Horror and chaos would soon ensue as the Mary Rose listed and sank only a few miles from Portsmouth shores, in full view of the King. The Mary Rose lay on the sea-bed for over 400 years before being raised in 1982, witnessed by millions worldwide on BBC television. Today you can visit the shipwreck and many of her 19,000 artefacts that have been recovered over the last four decades at the Mary Rose Museum and the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Suffice to say, there are few locations which allow you to step back in time and immerse yourself in a moment of British history quite like this one! To find out more about the Mary Rose Museum and how to book tickets, go to www.maryrose.org or on Facebook @MaryRoseMuseum --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chris-tetreault-blay7/message…
Chris takes a trip down memory lane for this episode, as he re-visits some childhood memories that he has recently been able to re-live through the eyes of his own kids. Situated on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, Blackgang Chine is home to the UK's oldest theme park. Steeped in local history of smuggling and shipwrecks, it's easy to see why this is somewhere that can stir the imagination and curiosity of almost everyone who visits there. Also hear how elements of Blackgang's history inspired another of Chris' own novels along the way. We start the series at a place very dear to Chris' heart, as Bradley Woods is not only the place where he and his wife first met and where he proposed to her 5 years later, but also provides the setting that first inspired Chris to write his debut novel, 'Acolyte'. Situated just outside of the town centre of Newton Abbot, Bradley Woods houses not only a National Trust manor house but also a spot with a dark history of its own.
