Billie Holiday is today’s featured episode as BlackFacts.com presents Significant Women in Black History—a special daily showcase for Women’s History Month.

Billie Holiday was born on April 7, 1915, in Philadelphia. She was an American jazz and swing music singer whose 26-year career saw her rise to the top of the charts.

In late 1937, Holiday had a brief stint as a big-band vocalist with Count Basie. A month after she was hired by Artie Shaw. She’s among the first Black women to work with a white orchestra.

At age 44, “Lady Day" died in New York City. The Billie Holiday Monument is located at Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore.
