Billie Holiday was born on April 7, 1915, in Philadelphia. She was an American jazz and swing music singer whose 26-year career saw her rise to the top of the charts.
In late 1937, Holiday had a brief stint as a big-band vocalist with Count Basie. A month after she was hired by Artie Shaw. She’s among the first Black women to work with a white orchestra.
At age 44, “Lady Day" died in New York City. The Billie Holiday Monument is located at Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore.
