HOMILY: "From the Cross to the Empty Tomb"

Text: Romans 5:8 (NIV) – “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

INTRODUCTION

Why do Christians gather on Good Friday with such solemn hearts, only to celebrate with joy just two days later on Easter Sunday? At the center of it all is Jesus—His death, His burial, and His resurrection. This is more than just a story we tell once a year—it’s the very heart of the Gospel. Good Friday and Easter are not just holy days—they are the reason we have hope, peace, and eternal life.

POINT 1 – Good Friday Shows the Depth of God’s Love

On Good Friday, we remember the brutal death of Jesus on the cross. It wasn’t just a tragic execution—it was a divine act of love. Jesus willingly took our place. The wrath of God against sin was poured out—not on us—but on His perfect Son.

This was no accident. It was God’s plan from the beginning. Isaiah 53:5 says, “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities…” On the cross, Jesus paid a debt we could never afford. Good Friday reminds us: we are more sinful than we’d ever dare admit, but more loved than we’d ever dare hope.

POINT 2 – Easter Confirms the Power of God's Victory

But the story didn’t end in the grave. On Easter morning, the stone was rolled away—not to let Jesus out, but to show the world that He had risen. The resurrection is proof that Jesus really is who He said He is—the Son of God, the Savior of the world.

If Jesus stayed dead, our faith would be empty. But because He rose, we know that sin, death, and hell have been defeated. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” But thank God—He has been raised!

POINT 3 – We Celebrate Because This Changes Everything

Good Friday and Easter are not just events we remember—they are truths we live by. Because of the cross, we are forgiven. Because of the empty tomb, we are free. The resurrection assures us that death is not the end. There is hope for the future and power for today.

This isn’t just theology—it’s transformation. Because He lives, we can face whatever comes. We celebrate Easter because Jesus’ resurrection is the guarantee of our resurrection. He opened the door to eternal life, and now nothing—not even death—can separate us from God’s love.

CONCLUSION

So this week, let’s approach Good Friday with humble hearts and Easter Sunday with joyful praise. The cross shows us God's love. The empty tomb shows us God’s power. Together, they show us God’s plan—to rescue and redeem a world lost in sin.

Let’s never grow tired of this story—it’s the greatest one ever told. And it’s not over yet. One day, the risen Christ will return, and every knee will bow. Until then, we live in the light of the cross and the power of the resurrection.
