Turns out, the disaster at Pompeii wasn’t exactly how we always pictured it. New research shows most people didn’t die slowly buried under ash — they were killed almost instantly by super-hot, fast-moving gas clouds. The heat was so intense that it basically caused their bodies to vaporize in seconds. That’s a lot more brutal and sudden than the slow suffocation we used to think happened.
