Can Anyone Be An 'AUSSIE'? A Critique of Peter Drew's 'AUSSIE' Poster Series
Manage episode 472751420 series 3654365
Peter Drew is an Australian artist known for his ‘AUSSIE’ poster series, which features images of individuals from diverse non-white ethnic backgrounds, some in full cultural dress, with the word “Aussie” beneath them. The message is clear: it suggests that the term “Aussie” has never had any racial or cultural connotations. However, this interpretation is misleading.
Following the release of our video on Drew’s posters, we received negative comments from those who appeared to misunderstand our argument. We did not claim that these individuals were bad people, of lesser value, or that they had not contributed to Australian society. Our point was simply that their ethnicities are not historically identifiable as “Aussies.” The term “Aussie,” as it is commonly understood, is a classification—and classifications, by definition, are exclusive. To fully grasp why this matters, we must examine the scientific and sociological definitions of a nation.
