Citizens for Health: Fighting for Health Freedom on Building Fortunes Radio
Welcome to the Citizens for Health Radio Show on Building Fortunes Radio, with your hosts Peter Mingils and Attorney Jim Turner. This episode, which originally aired on April 13th, 2018, delves into critical issues affecting consumer health choices, from the dangers of mislabeled products to the influence of tech giants on health information.
The Battle for Natural Health
In this segment, Attorney Jim Turner, a veteran advocate with Citizens for Health since 1993, discusses the organization's role as a consumer group at the forefront of the natural health freedom movement. He recounts a pivotal moment in 1993 when a massive public outcry, fueled by over one million letters to Congress, led to the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). This landmark legislation, often referred to as the "Bill of Rights" for dietary supplements, prevented a more restrictive FDA bill from passing. Since then, the dietary supplement market has grown from $3 billion to over $40 billion, and Citizens for Health has continued its work, helping to pass the Organic Food Production Act and influencing state-level policies on nutrition and vaccines.
A major focus of the show is the FDA's proposed new guideline for homeopathy. Turner explains that the FDA is attempting to regulate homeopathic remedies, which he says could be very disruptive to an industry that has operated safely under existing guidelines for over 30 years. He highlights the high cost of getting a drug approved through the FDA—a minimum of $100 million—which he believes sets up a system that favors expensive, conventional treatments and restricts access to effective, inexpensive alternatives.
The Threat of Censorship
The conversation then shifts to the growing concern of censorship on major internet platforms like Facebook, Google, and Wikipedia. Peter Mingils and Jim Turner discuss how these platforms systematically exclude or denigrate information about alternative medicine. Turner states that many of these platforms, whether through malicious intent or ignorance, label alternative therapies like homeopathy and chiropractic as "pseudoscience." He points out that some of this is due to "black swans," or individuals hired by the pharmaceutical industry, who actively alter information on sites like Wikipedia.
Turner and Mingils stress that consumers must seek out sources of information that are not controlled by large corporations. They mention that tech companies like Amazon.com are imposing standards on health products that are even stricter than those required by the government. This censorship, they argue, limits consumer choice and prevents individuals from finding their own path to wellness.
