We recently had a post receive the largest engagement on TikTok - over 19k views and over 300 comments. While some people were nice, most were angry and racist and hateful. The statement that yielded so much anger in our post? "Immigrants give more to Canada than they take. That's a fact."
One comment in particular is a common trope that is often used to argument against immigration. The idea that services for homeless populations are under resourced because of immigrant resources is unfortunately a lazy trope and honestly a lie. We debunk this idea highlighting how systemic issues like capitalism, unequal wealth distribution and policing the unhoused are all the real culprits behind lack of supports for the unhoused. Immigrant resources and homelessness resources are not in competition. With Canada being one of the wealthiest nations in the world, there's enough to go around.
Take a listen and remember to speak up and out when people are angry at immigrants giving. Gratefulness doesn't have to be a lost art.
