Today, I am talking to Marcello Estevao, Global Director, Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment at The World Bank. Marcello was the Deputy Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Finance in Brazil until end-December 2018. During his tenure at the Ministry, he also served as Brazil’s G20 Deputy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the New Development Bank (Shanghai), and member of FUNCEF’s Board of Directors. In today's episode he helps us decode some of the most pressing geopolitical climate risks such as:
1.The war in Ukraine: Supply disruptions and the potential for new sanctions will define risks and opportunities.
2. China-Western decoupling: Limits on cross-border investment will see growth and supply chains reoriented.
3. Hardening of technology blocs: Technology will be a key area of competition with new trade and investment controls.
4. Energy security imperative: Governments will seek new energy trading relationship and expand domestic energy generation.
5. Inflation-recession paradox: Even as central bank interest rate tightening could push economies into recession, high inflation is likely to persist;
and more..
