Today, we are joined by Dr. Annahita Nezami, a chartered psychologist, author, and founder of Overview Effect Therapy and EarthscapeVR . She is a systems thinker advocating for positive social change and has dedicated her professional career to researching the science and therapeutic value of salutogenic experiences like the Overview Effect. Her areas of interest include space health, eco psychology, neuroscience, stress, trauma, performance, and altered states of consciousness. Annahita serves as an advisor to multiple organisations and was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). She has been a guest lecturer at various establishments such as Kepler Space Institute, Deakin University, Central St Martin’s, and University College London (UCL), invited to talk about mental health and the Overview Effect on BBC Radio 4 and TEDx. She is an active researcher and published papers and articles with Springer and other media outlets. Several years ago Annahita interviewed NASA astronauts to investigate the therapeutic benefits of the Overview Effect, as part of her doctoral research. The Lunar Policy Handbook is a tool and resource for governance and policymaking on the moon, that was brought forward by the Moon Dialogs group as well as other thought-leaders in the space industry. We’ll cover the objectives of this document, as well as the legal challenges that accompany future sustainable lunar progress. Christopher is the Space Law Advisor at the Secure World Foundation , and a Professor of Law (Adjunct) at the Georgetown University Law Center where he co-teaches the Space Law Seminar. He is also a faculty member at the International Space University and a member of the International Institute of Space Law. Christopher has written widely on space law and policy issues, and represents the Secure World Foundation at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). He holds a Bachelor's of Art degree from Michigan State University, a Juris Doctor from New York Law School, and an Advanced Masters in Law in Air and Space Law from Leiden University’s International Institute of Air and Space Law (IIASL). He also has professional certificates from New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice, the European Centre for Space Law, the Hague Academy of International Law, and the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL). The project, titled "Take Up Space," includes a short film and a four-part companion podcast series that features the firsthand accounts of anonymous women and non-binary individuals working in the space industry. In this first episode, titled "Not Technical Enough" we share stories that focus on the many ways in which women are discouraged from working in STEM and technical fields in both subtle and overt ways. The current climate for women in STEM and women in space is described as "very cloudy" by one of the participants. And although progress has been made, there is still a long way to go to make the space industry more inclusive. Women are often made to feel uncomfortable if they have opinions or ideas, and the industry is still by and large dominated by men. Globally, women make up only 11% of astronauts, 20-22% of space industry workers, and 30% of researchers, scientists, and engineers . Despite the challenges, there are efforts to address these issues and bring about change. But perhaps change is not coming fast enough, and there is a risk of losing talented individuals who want to work in the industry if things don't improve. One speaker points out that recent triumphs, such as Wally Funk's trip to space, are few and far between. Many women have had to abandon their dreams due to lack of opportunities, discrimination, mistreatment, and other societal pressures. The speakers share their personal experiences with doubt, questioning their place in the industry, and feeling invisible or not taken seriously. One woman, in particular, recounts her experience with harassment in her first job in the field, which was extremely demoralizing and made her question whether it was worth staying in the industry. Despite the challenges, the speakers remain determined to pursue their passions and make a difference. The podcast provides a powerful look at the experiences of gender minorities in the space industry and highlights the need for greater inclusivity and diversity in the field. This episode also explores the speakers’ experiences with human resources and organizational failures to address bad actors in the workplace. Some individuals faced retaliation and were forced to leave their jobs, while others had to continue to deal with a hostile work environment. The podcast sheds light on the current climate for gender minorities in a male-dominated industry and emphasizes the need for creating an inclusive environment to make humanity's future in space more diverse and equitable. On this week's episode, we're joined by Zac Wager to discuss the scarcity of lunar resources and what we can do to work toward a better system of oversight and management to avoid depletion and other environmental issues in space. Our conversation is a deep-dive into Zac's recent paper, Scarcity of Lunar Resources - Scorecard & Case Study , for the Open Lunar Foundation Zac is a relatively recent newcomer to the space world but has made a considerable impact in a short amount of time. He has published multiple research pieces, won national competitions for his policy writing on the outer space treaty, and has participated in multiple international working groups reporting to the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). Zac currently occupies a policy advisor role with Global Affairs Canada where he analyzes, disseminates and coordinates various outer space policy and regulation initiatives at both the international and domestic level on behalf of the Canadian Government. He is part of the Canadian delegation to the UNCOPUOS and its subcommittees, where he has acquired valuable experience in the multilateral processes of developing international space law and policy. In addition to his current position, Zac also holds a research fellowship with the Open Lunar Foundation. In this capacity, he did advanced collaborative research and writing on the notions of mining and stewardship of lunar resources, contributed to Open Lunar's "Breaking Ground" lunar resources trust, and conducted significant investigations into the scarcity of lunar resources, with an emphasis on sustainable resource management. Zac has an eclectic academic background having received a master's degree in international public policy from the Balsillie School of International Affairs and an undergraduate degree in peace and disarmament studies from Wilfrid Laurier University. Zac is deeply passionate about issues of sustainability, social justice and the preservation of nature both on this planet and beyond it. On this week's episode, we’re joined by Dan Hawk to discuss lunar dust mitigation, planetary defense, and hemp rocket fuel. We’ll also chat about the important work that Dan is doing to make Indigenous peoples the “new face of space.” Dan was raised and lived on the Oneida Indian Reservation in Wisconsin. While in the Army National Guard and the U.S. Navy, he developed extensive experience in electronics (both in repair and testing) as well as propulsion. While working with Space Grants, Dan worked with high powered rockets, high-altitude balloons, tethered aerostats, and CubeSat satellites. He operated both First Nations Launch and Tethered Aerostat Programs. Dan has extensive carbon-based research experience and is an Amazon Black Earth expert. He is currently working with the UN’s Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space to ensure Native Americans have a seat at the space table. Dan is also working with NASA to create an Office of Tribal Affairs. On this week's episode, we’ll discuss lunar surface waste management, the important role this will play as humanity scales to a presence in space, and attempt to answer the very important question, “who takes out the trash on the moon?” My guest on the show, Nadia Khan, is a first year graduate student at MIT pursuing an M.S. in Technology and Policy at the Institute for Data Systems and Society. Nadia has a dual research assistantship position at the Engineering Systems Lab in the AeroAstro department as well as being a project leader at the MIT Media Lab's Space Exploration Initiative, where she is leading the development of MIT's Lunar Open Architecture platform. Nadia has an eclectic background, in international relations, disaster risk reduction, space weather and space exploration. She's also the operations lead for MIT's Global Start Up Workshop, a member of the MIT Grad Arts Forum's Executive Committee, professional development lead and executive committee member at the Graduate Women of Aerospace at MIT's AeroAstro lab. Prior to starting her second M.S. at MIT, Nadia was an Aziz Foundation Scholar at University College London where she completed a MSc in Space, Risk and Disaster Reduction. Her mission is simple, amplify the love of space, science and exploration and to encourage this generation that MARS is theirs. Also joining today, is Chris Carberry. Chris is the CEO and co-founder of Explore Mars and a well-respected expert and influential director of strategic alliances in the space community as well as with non-traditional organizations. Chris has presented oral (and written) testimony to both the United States Senate as well as the United States House of Representatives and has been active in all levels of policy engagement with both the Executive and Legislative branches of government. She is also a columnist for New Scientist and Physics World . Her research in theoretical physics focuses on cosmology, neutron stars, and dark matter, and she is active in Black feminist science, technology, and society studies. Essence magazine recognized her as one of “15 Black Women Who Are Paving the Way in STEM and Breaking Barriers.” She has been profiled in several venues, including TechCrunch , Ms. Magazine , Huffington Post , Gizmodo , Nylon , and the African American Intellectual History Society’s Black Perspectives . On today’s show we are joined by Cris van Eijk , an international lawyer researching what it means to make space 'common', and how international law attempts to do that. Frances "Poppy" Northcutt is a Texas attorney who began her career as a "computer" and then an engineer for the technical staff on NASA's Apollo Program during the space race. During the Apollo 8 mission, she became the first female engineer to work in NASA's Mission Control. Later in her career, Northcutt became an attorney specializing in women's rights. In the early 1970s, she served on the national board of directors of the National Organization for Women. Today, we are joined by Jacob Malthouse. Jacob works on the design and application of international multi-stakeholder governance models that empower open innovation. At the UNEP Finance Initiative, Jacob project-managed the first global collaboration of financial institutions to undertake research on the materiality of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues to equity pricing ( report here ). This work, along with the Freshfields report on the fiduciary duty of ESG issues, laid the foundations for the Principles for Responsible Investment (or PRI). Along with James Gifford, Jacob ran the PRI process until the first investor meeting. Jacob then left the UNEP Finance Initiative to join ICANN, the nonprofit responsible for critical aspects of technical Internet governance. While at ICANN, he developed and launched the ICANN fellowships program and was a founding member of the ICANN Global Partnerships team. On today's episode, we will be discussing the intersection of space science, climate change and policy. How can space technology and geospatial data improve our ability to tackle the daunting environmental challenges we see before us? And what does a positive and integrated Earth-Space future look like? We'll cover all of this and more. On today’s show we are joined by Dr. Raha Hakimdavar . Dr. Hakimdavar is the Director of Space Sciences at Ball Aerospace, where she develops civil space business strategy and leads engagements with the government and broader space sciences community. Previously, Dr. Hakimdavar served as a hydrologist and acting national program lead in remote sensing and geospatial analysis research at the USDA Forest Service, where she developed innovative approaches to manage forest and aquatic resources in the United States and internationally. She led research on the integration of space data into the UN Sustainable Development Goals and developed a whole of government framework for a global hydrology model to assess water risk during her Presidential Management Fellowship appointment at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Hakimdavar has consulted for UN Environment and the World Bank in the Caribbean and Latin America, notably helping to establish the first remote hydro-meteorological network for disaster risk reduction, agroforestry, and hydropower development in the South Department of Haiti. She is also an adjunct professor in water and climate science at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Dr. Hakimdavar earned a B.S. in civil engineering from California State Polytechnic University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering with an emphasis on hydrology from Columbia University. She was a Fulbright Scholar in the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and was awarded the KLM Airlines Sustainability and Innovation award for her work and research on hydro-ecology. Today, we will be discussing all things asteroids – especially fitting given the recent successful NASA DART (or Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission toward the end of 2022. We’ll be speaking with astronomer Dr. Martin Elvis and diving into his book – Asteroids: How Love, Fear, and Greed Will Determine Our Future in Space – it’s a fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in learning more about how asteroids could influence the future of space exploration. On today’s show we are joined by Dr. Martin Elvis . Dr. Elvis is an astronomer at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory which is a collaborative research effort alongside Harvard University and it is now known as the Center for Astrophysics. Dr. Elvis has obsessed for years over how supermassive black holes come to be seen as quasars, sources so bright that we see them out to the greatest distances and earliest times in the universe. For his PhD, Dr. Elvis discovered that quasars emit X-rays. And at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, using a fleet of space and ground based telescopes he mapped out the spectrum of quasars from X-rays to ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, and was able to suggest their inner structures. Concerned about the growing expense of space telescopes, Dr. Elvis has turned to researching how astronomy is needed to enable asteroid mining. He has since published widely on issues related to asteroid mining and the space economy, law and ethics, and even has Asteroid 9283 Martinelvis named after him. Gitika is the founder and CEO of IgnitedThinkers , a non-profit organization that she founded in the 8th-grade to spread space education and her love for aerospace to students across the world. Gitika is an aspiring aerospace physician, medical researcher, and astronaut. Through IgnitedThinkers, Gitika is working towards breaking the glass ceiling for minorities in the aerospace industry, incorporating more hands-on research space science-based activities into elementary education curriculums, and igniting the passions of all students by providing them the opportunity to explore and create. IgnitedThinkers' mission and vision statement are simple: to ignite, inform, and inspire students across the world. Conducting medical research at the Baylor College of Medicine Space Medicine Center, researching wind turbines at the University of Central Florida at Raghavan Research Group, working with professor Dr. Prasanta Pal from Brown University to develop telemedicine technology, student researcher at Columbia Medical School Center for Radiological Research, and interning last summer at NASA Ames Research Center at GeneLab, Gitika is climbing towards her goals going into aerospace medicine research. Gitika is extremely excited about the new understanding studying humans in space will bring to treat diseases here on Earth and the medical technological advancements that will occur on Earth with the greater utilization of telemedicine for deep-space exploration missions. Lucianne is an astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and the co-founder of the JustSpace Alliance . Walkowicz studies the ethics of space exploration, stellar magnetic activity, how stars influence a planet’s suitability as a host for alien life, and how to use advanced computing to discover unusual events in large astronomical data sets. From 2017-2018, they were the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/LOC Chair in Astrobiology at the Library of Congress. Walkowicz is the founding director of the LSSTC Data Science Fellowship Program , an initiative to provide astronomy graduate students with training in advanced computing. Walkowicz speaks and writes regularly on topics at the intersection of science and society, which have appeared on TED.com, Slate, The Washington Post, Vox, and more. Walkowicz holds a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from Johns Hopkins University, an MS and PhD in Astronomy from the University of Washington, and held postdoctoral fellowships at UC Berkeley and Princeton prior to joining the Adler Planetarium. John is Managing Director/Chief Technical Officer at JH Technology Associates LLC (JHTA), a California technology consulting company. John is also Executive Director/Chief Officer of the Hines Family Foundation for Education, Innovation, and Service, which is a non-profit, Atlanta, Georgia-based STEM, Innovation and Technology Workforce enabling organization. John’s specific technology emphasis areas include small satellite projects focusing on research and technology activities involving nano- and micro-satellites; biological technologies including synthetic biology; green and sustainable technologies; low-cost commercial off-the-shelf technologies, and emerging aerospace technologies. John retired as NASA-Ames Research Center Chief Technologist (CCT) in December, 2012, after nearly 37 years of service. John has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tuskegee University, an M.S. in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and has nearly 50 years of combined NASA, research, Air Force R&D, STEM workforce development, and technology advocacy experience. On this week's episode, we're joined by Fred Scharmen to discuss his recently released book Space Forces: A Critical History of Life in Outer Space , what it means to apply a more critical and anti-colonial lens to both the history and future of space exploration, and how humanity’s relationship with outer space has always spoken volumes about how we think about life on Earth. Fred teaches architecture and urban design at Morgan State University’s School of Architecture and Planning. He is the co-founder of the Working Group on Adaptive Systems, an art and design consultancy based in Baltimore, Maryland. His work as a designer and researcher is about how we imagine new spaces for future worlds, and about who is invited into them. He received his master's degree in Architecture from Yale University and his writing has been published in the Journal of Architectural Education , Log , CLOG , Volume , and Domus . Fred's architectural criticism has also appeared in the The Architect’s Newspaper , and in the local alt-weekly Baltimore City Paper . Sarah is a space journalist, international TV host and award-winning author. She has an academic background in astrophysics and is a global thought leader in the growing commercial space sector. On television, Sarah is one of the hosts of ‘Contact’ on Discovery Channel and Science Channel. The show is broadcast in the US and internationally. She is also a leading voice of space on various other television shows in the UK and US, regularly appearing on Sky, BBC, CNN, People Television, ITV News, Channel 4 News and Channel 5 News. As well as, on various documentaries on Discovery Channel and Science Channel and UK shows including Coast, BBC Sunday Morning Live and Derren Brown. As a writer, Sarah has authored four books about space exploration; Findout! Solar System , Do You Know about Space? , The Space Race: The Journey to the Moon and Beyond and most recently, Look Up: Our Story with the Stars . Sarah also regularly writes about space exploration for several media outlets including The Telegraph, Politico, The Sunday Times, CNN, BBC and The Royal Aeronautical Society. On this week's episode, we're joined by Dr. Claire Nelson to discuss how humanity can pivot from pandemic and crisis into a bright and flourishing future both on Earth and in space by shifting to a mindset rooted in sustainability. Dr. Nelson has been actively engaged in the business of international development for more than twenty-five years. She works in the area of project development and management, with a particular focus on private sector development. A renaissance woman, she is a development engineer, social entrepreneur, and futurist. Dr. Nelson is the first Jamaican woman to earn a doctorate degree in an engineering discipline and was the only Black student in her graduating class. Dr. Nelson holds industrial engineering degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Purdue University, as well as a doctorate in engineering management from George Washington University. She is the founder and president of the Institute of Caribbean Studies, Chief Ideation Leader at the Futures Forum, and Lead Futurist at the Center for Sustainable Futures at Morgan State University. Dr. Nelson is recognized as a White House Champion of Change , and sought after as a speaker on issues pertaining to economic development, globalization, and issues concerning the Caribbean and its people. On this week's episode, we're joined by Diana Trujillo to discuss the latest updates from the Mars Perseverance mission, how the space industry can work toward becoming more inclusive of the Latinx community, as well as Diana’s personal journey into the space industry. Diana Trujillo is an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she has served as a Flight Director and as the Robotic Arm System domain lead for the Mars Perseverance mission. Born and raised in Colombia, Diana immigrated to the United States at the age of 17 to pursue her dream of working for NASA. She enrolled in English as a Second Language courses, working full-time to support her studies in community college and later at the University of Florida and University of Maryland. After graduating, she worked on the Cygnus International Space Station resupply vehicle before joining JPL. Prior to her work with the Perseverance mission, Diana worked in several roles on the Mars Curiosity and Constellation programs since joining JPL in 2008. Most recently, she served as the Mission Lead, Deputy Project System Engineer, and Deputy Team Chief of the Engineering division for Curiosity (also known as the Mars Science Laboratory). In addition to her technical roles at JPL, Diana also created and hosted #JuntosPerseveramos , NASA’s first ever Spanish-language live broadcast of a major mission milestone, attracting a global audience of millions. She continues to provide English- and Spanish-language updates on the Perseverance mission via NASA’s Martes de Marte weekly video series and via her Twitter account . Richelle is an expeditionary artist exploring planetary connectivity, both on and off Earth. Her work explores connectivity in a world where human impact, technology, and the environment collide. She has had solo shows in Los Angeles, New York, Japan, and international orbit around Earth etched on satellites and aboard rockets. She even has recent artworks scheduled to launch to the Moon in 2022. Her work has been presented in the TEDx talk ‘What is our role within a Networked Society?’ and also in the ongoing art residency project ‘The Nomadic Artist,’ where she travels the world to reflect social and environmental changes across the globe. She is an analog astronaut and Head of Creative Research for analog space missions on the Moon and Mars via Hawai'i Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (better known as HI-SEAS), Sensoria Program, and Lunares Research Station. Gribble is the Co-Founder and Director of Space Programs for Beyond Earth , an all-female artist collective exploring intersections between art, biology, and space. On this week's episode, we're joined by Nicolas Nelson, MD candidate and Operations Director at Out Astronaut. We’ll discuss the emerging field of space medicine and its importance for the future of space activities, the current climate for the LGBTQ+ community in the space industry, and what Out Astronaut is doing to make space more diverse and inclusive. Nicolas is a medical student with plans to become a radiation oncologist and flight surgeon, taking care of cancer patients on Earth while conducting astronaut health surveillance and radiation research. Two of his goals have been to encourage aspiring LGBTQ+ professionals in science and to advocate for planetary stewardship. He cofounded the AMSRO Diversity Committee, which is taking strides to support diversity and inclusion in astronautics and aerospace medicine. He earned a bachelor’s at University of California, Los Angeles in biochemistry and English, after which he taught junior high science and worked as a hospital pharmacy technician, then a research assistant and teaching assistant at his post-baccalaureate program. At his medical school, Thomas Jefferson University, he externed in radiation oncology while keeping active in the aerospace medicine community. While working toward his MD, he continues to be involved in the Out Astronaut Project, cancer research, and other space medicine activities. Nic remains a bicoastal lover of nature and exploration who hopes to wear many hats in his career: clinician, researcher, advocate, global health volunteer, medical educator, and one day, maybe even astronaut. She is also an analog astronaut, having completed an analog Mars mission, Sensoria M2, at HI-SEAS in 2020. Chelsea is also a musician and writes, performs and records indie-pop music under the pseudonym Foxanne. As Foxanne, she released her debut full-length record in 2020, titled "It's real (I knew it)," named after an iconic scene from the hit sci-fi film Galaxy Quest . The album features a number of space-y Easter eggs, including audio from the OA-9 rocket launch, a 2018 cargo mission that launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, and a song written from the perspective of NASA's Opportunity rover. Following this album, in 2021, she released "Hello, Mars," a song featuring the first audio recorded on the surface of Mars, recently captured by NASA's Perseverance rover. And tomorrow, she will release her upcoming single "I Could Go On," an expressive, cosmic, indie pop-and-soul tune that uses an upbeat vibe to convey a message about struggling to try and find meaning in existence. The song, which includes subtle nods to space and science, will be released alongside a music video filmed at the Liberty Science Center's planetarium. The song will even go to SPACE! The single will ride along to space on the personal playlist of Foxanne's friend Dr. Sian Proctor, an astronaut who will bring the song on her upcoming mission to Earth's orbit, known as Inspiration4. My guest on the show, AJ Link, received his JD from The George Washington University Law School. His studies focused extensively on disability law, international human rights, and space law. AJ has been actively involved with disability advocacy in the Washington, D.C. area and nationally within the United States. While at GW, he chaired the Diversity and Inclusion Assembly for the Student Association and the Student Life Committee. He also founded the Atypical Student Society, a student organization for neurodiverse and disabled law students, and served as its inaugural president. AJ was the president of the GW Space Law Society and co-chaired the Student Affinity Group Enterprise. AJ was awarded the Michael Dillon Cooley Memorial Award by his graduating class for his compassion and humanity in serving his fellow students. He serves on several advisory boards that focus on disability advocacy and social justice. AJ is openly autistic. He was a 2020 Disability:IN NextGen Leader and was inducted into the Susan M. Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame. AJ is currently pursuing an LL.M in Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law, while also chairing The Center for Air and Space Law Task Force on Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Aerospace and a Senior Editor of the Journal of Space Law. He works as a research director for the Jus Ad Astra project and serves as co-president of the National Disabled Law Students Association, which he co-founded. On this week's episode, we’ll discuss the increasing risk of potential collisions in our near Earth space environment as the problem of orbital debris continues to worsen, and what we can all do to become space environmentalists and better stewards of the shared commons of our sky. My guest on the show, Dr. Moriba Jah , joined the Oden Institute core faculty in 2018 at the University of Texas at Austin, and is currently serving as an associate professor of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. His research interests are in non-gravitational astrodynamics and advanced/non-linear multi-sensor/object tracking, prediction, and information fusion. His expertise is in space object detection, tracking, identification, and characterization, as well as spacecraft navigation. He earned his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder specializing in astrodynamics and statistical orbit determination. Prior to joining UT Austin, Dr. Jah was the Director of the University of Arizona’s Space Object Behavioral Sciences with applications to Space Domain Awareness, Space Protection, Space Traffic Monitoring, and Space Debris research to name a few. One of the guests on this episode is, Julia Malette , a life-long space enthusiast and a practicing attorney in the United States. Julia graduated from the George Washington University Law School with high honors in 2019. During law school, Julia was a finalist at the 2018 North American rounds of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court and interned at the FCC Satellite Division. Julia has also worked with the Satellite Industry Association, as a consultant researcher with LMI Advisors, and is a member of the Maryland Bar. Julia is also currently the Internship Coordinator for the Space Court Foundation . Bailey has also participated in HI-SEAS as an analog astronaut studying lava tubes in a two-week simulated moon base mission. Demar Matthews and his firm, OffTop Design , are engaging Black communities in the planning process such that they are better represented in their built environment, and in so doing, might better inform how we design and build future structures and cities in space someday. My guest on the show, Demar Matthews, is a Los Angeles-based architectural designer, theorist, and writer. Demar is the founder and Principal of OffTop Design. He also works with A+D Architecture + Design Museum in Los Angeles as a curator and exhibitions associate. Demar received his Bachelor’s from HBCU Lincoln University of PA, and his Master’s of Architecture at Woodbury University where he was awarded the Graduate Thesis Prize for his project Black Architecture: Unearthing the Black Aesthetic. In this episode, I have the opportunity to talk with Madhu Thangavelu, about the space architecture and infrastructure that will support Artemis mission objectives, and a sustained presence on the Moon. My guest on the show, Madhu is a lecturer of both astronautical engineering and architecture at the University of Southern California. Madhu leads the Graduate Space Concepts Synthesis Studio at USC. He holds degrees in both engineering and architecture and has contributed extensively to the areas of architectural design synthesis, space architecture, space systems engineering, and lunar base design. He is the author or co-author of over 70 technical papers in space architecture, as well as numerous articles in space-related trade journals and magazines dealing with space stations, lunar base design and human factors. He is a co-author of the book The Moon: Resources, Future Development and Settlement . He is on the advisory board of the Moon Society and the editorial board of the Journal of Space Philosophy.
