These are the first pictures from the new world’s largest camera! It’s at the Vera C Rubin observatory in Chile. It discovered 2,104 new asteroids in just 10 hours, just in this little area! So it’s probably going to find WAY more... Plus, it captured 10 million galaxies. This camera is the size of a small car. Its sensor is 3,200 megapixels. For context, the iPhone 16 has a 48 megapixel camera. Its resolution is so good it can spot a golf ball from 15 miles away. Its goal is to take pictures of the entire southern sky, and do that over and over again to piece together these incredible images. The amount of data gathered by this observatory in its first year will be bigger than what’s been collected by all other optical observatories combined. In the end, it's going to create a 3D movie of the universe that will help us track asteroids, stars, and over 20 billion galaxies.
