In this episode of Cloud Cost Optimization, Nick and Jason talk about how clients and other organizations commonly manage their cloud spending. Not understanding who is accountable for cloud spending across various parts of the organization is an issue that should be addressed as soon as possible.

They discuss the importance of visibility early on and internal accountability when it comes to cloud optimization and spending throughout the whole process. The duo also talks about addressing accountability issues that cause politicization in the cloud.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Visibility when it comes to spending
  • Not having internal accountability is the root of many issues
  • Cutting costs vs understanding costs

QUOTES

Coming up with a solution without understanding the why - Nick: "Part of the problem is a little bit of putting the cart before the horse. Because they understand why they need that, but they don't yet have the ability for an organization like that to function because they can't yet decide who's accountable for what."

Understanding what you have and why you have it is integral - Jason: "Why would I want to buy a reserved instance or savings plan if I compute that I don't need? It doesn't make any sense. Just understanding what you have and why you have it and making sure you have a solid documentation strategy, tagging strategy, whatever it may be for where those resources lie is the first step once you've assigned accountability."
