２００１年１月、東京の新大久保駅で、韓国人と日本人の男性が、線路に落ちた人を助けようとして、電車にはねられて亡くなりました。
韓国人のイ・スヒョンさんは留学生で２６歳でした。事故から２０年になった２６日、イさんが通っていた日本語学校の人たちが、新大久保駅でイさんたちのために祈りました。
母親のシン・ユンチャンさんは、今年は新しいコロナウイルスの問題があるため、イさんのふるさとのプサンで式に出ました。シンさんは「亡くなった息子は、日本と韓国の関係をよくしたいと思っていました。私も２つの国がいい関係でいるために、役に立ちたいと思います」と話しました。
両親はイさんのために集まったお金を、日本に来た留学生の奨学金に使っています。今まで１８の国と地域の留学生１０００人ぐらいが奨学金をもらっています。
