And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. A number of Lawson outlets have already started using paper containers for some rice bowl dishes. The chain plans to expand this to around 6,400 outlets by May. It expects the move will reduce plastic waste by about 250 tons per year. The chain will also use paper cups for iced coffee instead of plastic. FamilyMart is making similar moves. It began selling a grilled salmon dish in a paper box in March. Only the lid is plastic, so use of the material is reduced by about 40%. The chain plans to use the new packaging for three other types of meals this month. On Wednesday, the Sapporo District Court delivered its ruling on a lawsuit filed in 2019 by three same-sex couples in Hokkaido. The plaintiffs argued that being unable to marry disregards the principles of freedom and equality guaranteed by the Constitution. The judge said in her decision on Wednesday that there should not be a difference in the legal benefits that a person receives, based on the individual's sexual orientation. She added that the current practices lack reasonable grounds and are discriminatory. The plaintiffs had sought compensation from the government, but the court rejected that claim. There are similar cases pending before courts in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Ceremony held in Hawaii for Ehime Maru victims 38:39

Article A memorial ceremony has been held in Hawaii to mark the 20th anniversary of a maritime accident involving a Japanese high school training boat and a US navy nuclear submarine. The Ehime Maru sank off Hawaii after it was struck by the USS Greeneville on February 9, 2001, local time. The training boat belonged to Uwajima Fisheries High School. Nine people died, including students and others. The ceremony took place on Tuesday at a waterfront park in Hawaii. It was scaled back this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Bereaved family members from Japan did not attend. At the ceremony, the names of the victims were read out, and participants observed a moment of silence at 1:43 p.m., the exact time of the accident. Attendees laid Hawaiian flower leis in front of a cenotaph bearing the names of the victims. One of the organizers, Earl Okawa, said it was unfortunate that the bereaved family members were unable to attend because of the pandemic. Article A memorial ceremony was held in Busan, South Korea, for a student who died at a Tokyo train station 20 years ago trying to rescue a man who had fallen onto the tracks. Lee Su-hyon and a Japanese photographer jumped from the platform to save the man at Shin-Okubo Station on January 26, 2001. All three were hit by a train and killed. On Tuesday, a ceremony was held at Lee's grave in his hometown Busan. About 20 people attended, including Lee's mother Shin Yoon-chan and the Japanese Consul-General in Busan, Maruyama Kohei. Lee was studying in Japan, hoping to become a bridge between the two countries. After his death, his parents created a scholarship program with condolence money, which has helped nearly 1,000 students study in Japan. Lee's mother was tearful as she said her son died to realize huge love that transcends borders. She said she, too, will do her best to contribute to bilateral friendship. Article A very interesting episode about a typo mistake on a beer can: There’s many a slip twixt the cup and the lip — and for Sapporo Breweries Ltd., one recent slip was a misspelling of the word “lager” on the label of a new product. Now beer lovers will have to wait until Feb. 2 to enjoy their first sip. The brewery, in cooperation with convenience store company FamilyMart Co., designed a label for its new Sapporo Kaitakushi Bakushu Shitate brand of beer, which was set to be released on Tuesday. But when it was noticed that the label bore the word “lagar” instead of “lager,” the release was canceled. Beer drinkers online began clamoring for the brew to be released anyway, on the grounds that there were no problems with its ingredients or quality. Both companies expressed their “sincerest gratitude for the warm responses” from the public. They will sell the product after all, saying that it was made using traditional brewing methods and boasts a special thick and rich flavor. Article A Shinto shrine in the Japanese city of Toyama has started using a cashless payment service to receive New Year donations with digital money. For many Japanese people, it is a custom to visit a shrine during the New Year holidays. They toss money into a donation box and offer prayers. Ecchuinari Shrine in Toyama has introduced the new payment system, which was launched by a regional bank headquartered in the city this month. Using a smartphone app called "J-Coin Pay," worshippers can scan a QR code displayed at the side of the donation box and enter the amount of money they want to offer. The shrine says it introduced the system to eliminate the use of cash and promote a "new normal" to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The shrine also removed ladles at its stone basin. Worshippers usually share them to scoop water from the basin to purify their hands and rinse their mouths. The shrine also says it will remove the bell hung with a thick rope above the donation box. People usually shake the rope to ring the bell before offering prayers. A shrine official said deities know everything and they receive people's wishes even if they donate with digital money. He says he thought the digitalization of donations was necessary amid the pandemic. An official of the regional bank says he wants more shrines and temples to use the service. Article Meiji Jingu, a major Shinto shrine in central Tokyo, has decided to close its gates during New Year's Eve to prevent spread of the new coronavirus.
