Happy New Year! Ready for some Emerging Tech predictions for 2024? Well, don't worry we're happy to be wrong and contrarian. We considered this a fun thought exercise for posterity sake to see where our head and hearts were. In fact, some of these predictions are already beginning to poke their head up through the cracks of reality. Our Top 10 Emerging Tech Predictions for 2024 AI disappears behind the scenes - It will then quietly be used in almost everything as an expected feature. AI resurrects old and hard to use Tech - Pain points and other difficult parts of the learning curve could be bypassed with possible solutions AI provides. Everyone will be a video influencer - No longer will your network be camera shy as people begin "Vlogging" (again). Media Tech will evolve FAST - We already saw NeRF get ousted by Gaussian Splats, what other shifts will happen this year? "New" Tech Innovation will be integrations of other tech - As categories mature, the next logical step is connecting them together. Apple Vision Pro will not meet expectations - Initial hype is alluring but the real work after is hard as we will potentially see with the rise of Augmented Reality (AR). Hardware will be a race to the bottom, Software will continue to be the golden goose - The Maker movement is giving hardware incumbents a run for their money. Will we see new creations and fabricators or will winner take all? NFTs will make a comeback through sports betting and investing - Many think Crypto is ded but, not so fast. Sports entertainment might have the Ace card in this equation that makes it a killer app (without people even realizing it). Tech for Good will go mainstream - With social happiness indexes and opportunity zones, we have a whole new set of imperatives and metrics to guide our resources and networks of builders. Sustainability will be at the forefront of the conversation - Corporate responsibility is in the spotlight more and more and this time the conversation is deeper than interest groups alone. This episode is an initial exploration of real world examples of Technology used for social good. While researching our last episode, 6 Ways to Use Tech For Good , we came across a paper by McKinsey, a famous consultancy, called Tech for Good: Smoothing disruption, improving well being . The paper covers topics like core definitions of technology and well-being, how to measure the impact of technology, challenges and an overview of concrete case studies of Technology. Ultimately, there are lots of great facts and figures to support the discussion and inspired several of these examples. We highly recommend reading the Tech for Good paper mentioned above for additional detail. 8 Examples of How to Use Tech for Good Create community around Tech for Good - That's exactly what an organization with that name does, founded by Ellen Ward and Máirín Murray in Dublin, Ireland. Their group encourages people of all skills to take back their technological power in an open and inclusive environment. Mixed Reality (XR) gives Producers the opportunity to give audiences socially impactful visceral experiences - XR is now absorbing all the realities like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). In addition, with Spatial Audio, we have an opportunity to use this rich media platform to inform and transform viewers. AI and Education helps teachers do more with less - Teachers can be freed up with automated administrative tasks and even use "chatbots" to increase interaction and engagement with students Telehealth and MedTech reduce in-patient service by 50% - In India they reduced in person visits by 50% and saved over $4 billion. Healthcare is well known for high costs and inefficiencies, this new direction to bring in a new era of operations making services and outcomes better (not to mention life expectancy). Banking the 5 billion unbanked - This means bringing financial services to most of the world who still do not have bank accounts. The craziest part: more people have cellphones than running water. This means mobile banking and currencies (Ahem, Crypto) could bring a lot of new users in, fast. AI Traffic Management to reduce pollution and traffic - There is an estimated 3-15% reduction in air pollution from new AI systems. We already have AI used heavily for airports and air travel which helps avoid costly delays and losses from being inefficient. This will be key to maintain bigger and bigger infrastructures moving forward. Cloud computing dis-intermediates job gatekeepers for negatively impacted social groups - This could range from the disabled and invalid to LGBTXQ+ to women and people of color. Reputation based hiring for traditional on-boarding methods are being upended as people find new ways (and venues) to work. AgTech combining Industrial Tools and Feeding the World - It's no surprise that Industrial Agriculture needs an upgrade, both from a fossil fuel and chemical use standpoint. Free and Open Source Software, FOSS for short, is the backbone of computers, programming, and the World Wide Web (WWW) as a whole. In fact, almost 40% of known websites' operating systems (OS) and a whopping 85% of smartphones use Linux, a wildly popular free and open source operating system. (Source: True List ) “Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Thus, “free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.” Richard Stallman, Free Software Foundation (FSF) and GNU founder Another one of Stallman's breakthrough ideas was the 4 essential freedoms . The 4 Essential Freedoms are: The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose. The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others. The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others. Linus Torvalds, Finnish Developer, Creates the World Famous Linux Kernel Richard Stallman and his team had mostly redone Unix with his GNU operating system by 1991 but he was missing the kernel (like a computer nervous system). Namely, the brain of the operating system that talks to the hardware and software and translates it into language our keyboard or mouse understands. Linux Torvalds, a Finnish computer scientist, stepped in at this stage and created the first iteration of this new and innovative program. Believe it or not, Linux was initially considered a hobby project by Torvalds. 6 Reasons Why Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) Will Save the World Openness and transparency offers unprecedented security and resilience - A worldwide Peer2Peer (P2P) review of code helps avoid weakness in the code and instill robust engineering from the ground up. Maximizes the speed of innovation through open global collaboration - Anyone can freely download and re-purpose code anywhere in the world with a computer and internet. Brings powerful code and tools in the hands of the lay person - FOSS gives a bionic arm to builders who could not have created that on their own. Brings out the best in humans - Most of the open source community are unpaid, voluntary and passionate builders. It is a true group effort of helping each other through making these free public goods available to all. Open source code is protected under free speech - There was a famous case where the NSA threatened to jail Phil Zimmerman for coding Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption protocol. Thankfully they failed and the 1st amendment prevailed which now has precedence for protecting all published code. It's (usually) free of charge - In a world where everything is metered and comes with a price tag, open source is a refreshing change of pace economically. This enables anyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, to use it. Despite it's transparent nature and often free price, open source software is a powerful force used by thousands of companies worldwide. While there have been a lot of positive shifts toward social good and renewable energy sources, there is still plenty to be done. Luckily, there are some wonderful new technology tools and companies that are taking a bite out of this problem. 9 Epic Ways AgTech Is Saving The World It enables environmentally friendly (supply) chains of value: Bitcoin mining operations often use alternative energy sources and excess energy production as fuel. Supply chain-wise, seed to sale and battery production are using Blockchain to ensure product authenticity and track equipment life-cycles. Electricity is revolutionizing renewable power and fuel use: We have the Electric Vehicle (EV) revolution upon us, but this doesn't just mean cars and trucks. There are now electric tools for both light and heavy farm activities. This means chainsaws, lawnmowers and even earth moving backhoes. Free and open-source software democratizes code: Due to the free and open nature of most software, anyone with the interest and motivation can access high-value and complex code they could not easily create themselves. The Maker Movement facilitates high-value yet low-cost tech: Single-board computers, sensors or even 3D printers create new means of production and analysis for anyone to use. The Internet of Things (IoT) allows unprecedented remote land management: Without modern cloud and internet-enabled technology, many functions are very labor-intensive and not possible to scale. Strong Internet and Bandwidth enables never before seen connectivity: The emergence of cloud computing and instant connectivity from anywhere has taken decades of research and innovation. Now that we have less expensive costs and easier ability to move data, new levels of management, growth and efficiency are possible. Dangerous and labor intensive processes are now made easy: Making the complex and difficult easy is a incredible trend we are seeing. It's been a little bit since a Rants, Raves and Reflections episode, and this time I'm talking about Technology in general. Technology is not without cost, and I'm not talking monetarily. I'm talking time and sanity. That is usually your cost of admission. Ok, let's jump in to my 7 Rants, Raves and Reflections on Tech in General: Tech is always a project - Troubleshooting is a constant battle you need to be ready for. It takes time - The cost more often than not will be time and sanity, not money. Sure, tech costs money, but the biggest ratio will be the above. New parts (especially non-standard ones) can be a problem to source - I had a laptop die and was not able to get a motherboard replacement. And it was out of warranty, wah wah wahhhhhh. REKT. As in laptop ded and that's that. You save $ - Learning knowledge and skills for yourself will help you be more self-sufficient and not require any expensive service provider time to fix your problem. Keep in mind, you will pay in time (and sanity). It's fulfilling to do Tech for yourself - What is the intrinsic value of being able to do things for yourself? I would say it's pretty high, especially as times get tight and there isn't the usual disposable income for unexpected repairs. It's efficient - Using the Raspberry Pi in particular is super efficient with a low power draw. It's also efficient with your time and money to have the skill of Tech in your back pocket. There's a learning curve - Your form of payment required will be time and sanity. Noticing a trend here? If you aren't willing to cough up the energy for this, you don't get the glory. Meet NeRF, Neural Radiance Fields, a breakthrough technology in media, namely photography, video and 3D asset rendering. No, it's not those children's toys some of us may remember. It's actually a really powerful conglomeration of technology tools like Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) fueled software and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) hardware. NeRF Definitions "Neural radiance fields (NeRFs) are a technique that generates 3D representations of an object or scene from 2D images by using advanced machine learning. The technique involves encoding the entire object or scene into an artificial neural network , which predicts the light intensity -- or radiance -- at any point in the 2D image to generate novel 3D views from different angles." On this episode, we wanted to take a little break from the usual information firehose and rabbit holes we are used to. Instead, we wanted to cover some cool and fun things you can do with your Raspberry Pi. After all, what fun is technology if we aren't doing interesting things for us personally? 10 Cool Things to Do With Your Raspberry Pi Here's our list of 10 cool things to do with your Raspberry Pi: Create your own Media center (with a Netflix-like User Interface) - Programs like Kodi make this super simple and easy to do. Your task prior to this is organizing your media (music, movies, etc.) so they can be read and shown in the User Interface (UI) by the program. Play Games - This could be old school video game emulators from our favorite consoles. However, our absolute favorites are 90s point-and-click adventure games with pixel art graphics. Keep in mind that the Pi doesn't have powerful GPUs, so you'll have to limit performance to more modest game requirements. Make it into a Camera - We have talked about the High Quality Camera module before, but you can also get the regular module, which we've seen run on a Pi Zero, and the video looked fantastic (especially for that tiny thing). Learn how to hack (ethically, of course) - Our friend Frank, who has been on the show, recently told us about installing Kali Linux, a commonly used Linux distribution for hacker training. Also, sand-boxing yourself in the Pi while you tinker is a fairly safe way to explore the unknown. Control other devices and micro-controllers - This is literally a life's work where you could spend eternity playing around. The cool part is that the sky's the limit with what you can do once you start connecting these devices. You could be an industrial maker factory, a simple science project prototyping electronics, or anything in between. Create your own home brew PBX corporate phone system - Yep, just the ones at the office, except at your place. It's pretty incredible that, with a few programs and no additional hardware, your Raspberry Pi can be transformed into a common corporate communication tool. Create your own persistent local data storage or Network Attached Storage (NAS) - This is a super practical and helpful way to operate locally with your data. Internet and network access are optional, as you can simply plug your hard drive into the Pi. Create your own website on the dark net - Yep, might sound crazy, but you can do it pretty easily. With some simple instructions (hat tip to Network Chuck), you can have your very own hidden website only accessible by a Tor-enabled browser. Mine Monero Cryptocurrency - While this won't be anywhere near a profitable endeavor, it's pretty great for learning and proving concepts for Blockchain and privacy technology. Considering the massive firepower most successful miners have, this is a pretty cool and unique thing to do. Create your own closed circuit security camera - If you followed #3 you have opened up a lot of value and possibilities with capturing video. (You can also use a webcam.) One of those possibilities is creating your own security camera that you can program and customize. Well, that's our 10, but we will be coming up with more cool and fun projects in the future. But, before we dive into ACM Siggraph 2023, let's explore the parent organization that created it, called the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). What is the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)? " ACM, the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, delivers resources that advance computing as a science and a profession. ACM provides the computing field's premier Digital Library and serves its members and the computing profession with leading-edge publications, conferences, and career resources." Source: ACM Website The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) began informally via several symposium events by Harvard, MIT and the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers in early 1947. Later that year, at Colombia University in New York, a meeting was organized that highlighted this increasing interest in computers. That day, they founded the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). The mission statement created at the founding meeting was: "The purpose of this organization would be to advance the science, development, construction, and application of the new machinery for computing, reasoning, and other handling of information." The "metaverse" is known by many, but often not fully understood. This episode brings some clarity and concrete definitions to this topic. Put simply, the metaverse is an open, shared global, 3-dimensional digital environment that's "always on" for people to exist in. This could mean anything from building worlds and games with Roblox or Minecraft to full-on raging at a concert with peers like our friends at Future Fest facilitate. In Minecraft and Roblox, once you build something, it remains in this new realm almost indefinitely. When you hear "persistent," that means it's always there. Future Fest takes a different approach, and instead of creating a fixed world, they customize experiences for hyper-specific communities, as seen in Pride Fest for Cardano. Needless to say, there are many ways to skin...well, a Metaverse. Metaverse Definitions Here are some common descriptions: "A persistent virtual environment that allows access to and interoperability of multiple individual virtual realities." Merriam-Webster "Essentially, it's a world of endless, interconnected virtual communities where people can meet, work and play, using virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps or other devices." National Public Radio (NPR) "Broadly speaking, the technologies companies refer to when they talk about “the metaverse” can include virtual reality—characterized by persistent virtual worlds that continue to exist even when you're not playing—as well as augmented reality that combines aspects of the digital and physical worlds." WIRED Magazine "Technically, a metaverse is a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical and digital reality...Eventually these destinations became sites on a virtual shared space — similar to how a metaverse will develop." We were thrilled to get a College student studying Technology Marketing reach out on LinkedIn asking about how they could learn tech in a long term and lasting way. We pondered on this question a bit and came up with 13 things you can do now to learn about emerging tech. 13 Ways to Learn Emerging Tech Learn how to learn - If you can master a great process for learning you can absorb any complex topic. Key topics range from accelerated learning to memory to mental models. Read - This will be the most critical way to gather more information on whats out there. This is often free and only costs your time. Find community online and off - There are many groups online like discord and telegram. For offline engagement, Meetup.com and Eventbrite are great places to find people doing events. Interact with newcomers, experts and everyone in between - This is a great way to see what topics people are talking about. This could be anything from a social media interaction to calling a techy friend to chat. The more you do this, the more dialed in you will become to what's valuable to people. Ask questions - The more curious you can be the better. Even if you are just asking questions for your own self-study, this is a very helpful practice. Extra points if you seek out experts and authors and ask them directly. Write a glossary of vocab words - This may seem like overkill if you aren't a writer. However, this helps immensely if you're new to the space and need to get up to speed quickly. Your upfront efforts will go a long way in the future. Research definitions - Take your glossary above and research the meaning of each word. Extra credit if you write them down in your master glossary document. If you do this regularly your core knowledge will increase FAST. Go to conferences (virtual and in person) - In person tends to be more visceral and memorable but if you're diligent and focused, online events are great and just as inspiring. Whether you're attending in person or virtual events, you can be engaged and curious through conversations or digital chats. Curate authors, experts and websites to follow - This helps create your own "newspaper" of content and topics to peruse regularly. Take your time and don't get too overwhelmed. It's normal to feel a little frazzled from the volume of information you will find but you got this. Join great email lists - Don't be afraid to sign up for someone's newsletter or even click an ad that looks like an informative "newsletter". We found exceptional email lists on various topics this way. Be disciplined and take your time to curate the absolute best. Master project and time management - There will be tons of information to go through so, the more organized you are the better. This will help you learn and do more in record time. Use the tech tools as much as possible - This could be software or buying some hardware like a Raspberry Pi. The more time you spend with the tools the more your knowledge will grow automatically just by using them. Buy books and courses - If you are a reader, books are super inexpensive (sometimes free) and just require a payment of time and focus. If you are more of a "watcher" into videos, a course might work well but you will often pay 10 or 100X the price of a book. On this episode, Aaron Mangal interviews Justin Guidici, co-founder and head of product for Telos (TLOS) Network. Telos aims to provide fast, scalable infrastructure and feeless transactions plus smart contract functionality. The value proposition improves on problems with many Layer 1 Blockchains like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). Blockchains like Ethereum and Bitcoin Have Traffic Jams When Busy Often called "Layer 1" Blockchains, these are like the main superhighway that most people use. "Layer 2s" are smaller side streets that help reduce traffic from Layer 1s. You may remember issues with Ethereum and various NFTs like Crypto Kitties which ultimately jammed up the network and caused fees to balloon sky-high . This has caused Layer 2 solutions like Polygon (MATIC) to emerge for minting NFTs and domains on Unstoppable Domains for free. Telos marries High Performance and Multi-Chain Functionality with Simplified Developer Tools Originally launched in 2018 by about 150 community members with no ICO or VC funding, and is considered by most to have been a "fair launch". Telos aims to improve on both governance (management) and performance compared to the current Blockchain technology available. They prioritize empowering DApp developers, who have often been an afterthought, which led to a lack of reliable tools and code for them to work with. Telos also improves functionality on Ethereum with their Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) which runs more efficiently on the Telos Blockchain. They were even acclaimed by the ETH community for finding a mission-critical bug on Ethereum and providing a top-performing EVM. Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) Protocol Will Bring a Multi-Chain Universe The implementation of the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) Protocol specifically for Antelope.io was recently released and is working now. The goal is to use this technology to create a unified experience across all Blockchains. While these tools are brand spanking new and will take time to be perfectly polished, this is a great development in what has traditionally been a siloed and fragmented Blockchain environment. This means the ability to build and "travel" seamlessly between various Blockchains. This is a great time to be involved in the Crypto space, despite some negative opinions from the public. TLDR; No, Crypto is not dead . Yes, there are problems and yes, there are plenty of reasons to criticize it. But that doesn't equate to death. In fact, it's quite the opposite and is significantly better than its early years on a technology level. 5 Reasons Why Crypto Is Not Dead Reason # 1: The price has dropped significantly since it's all time high - Welcome to the club. Price is cool and all but it's no barometer for the quality of technology. The code and protocols behind Crypto should be looked at on their own merits by its users. Reason # 2: The US Government is attacking US based Crypto businesses - You have guys like Brad Sherman, a US Congressman, calling Bitcoin an "electronic pet rock" . Then there's Gary Gensler, current SEC chairman , who thinks most if not all Crypto assets are securities and is willing to fight about it. Reason # 3: Uncertain Taxation Requirements - The IRS Notice in 2014 officially declared Crypto Assets to be property which puts them under the purview of the taxation rules of that asset category. Beyond that, there has been little to no additional regulatory guidance. Reason #4: It's Hard to Build On - Not only is the technology difficult to build on but the management of communities and stakeholders are challenging. Add on the fact that most tokens are denoted in Bitcoin (BTC) or $, maintaining a reasonable value can be very challenging especially during bear markets (like now). Reason #5: A Lack of Cross-chain Interoperability and Compatibility - There is still a lot of friction going from dollars into Crypto and also Crypto to Crypto. The Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol brands itself as a solution but we have yet to see full functionality rolled out to scale. Still, the current proof of concepts work well thus far. While Cryptocurrencies are by no means dead, they are under significant pressure from every conceivable Government and Banking financial authority worldwide. Despite this, Crypto continues marching on year after year and ultimately has improved greatly on a technical level.
