This week, we saddle up for Rust (2025), a Western that finally made it to the big screen after a long—and let’s just say eventful—ride through the desert of production limbo. Directed by Joel Souza and starring Alec Baldwin as a grizzled outlaw named Harland Rust, this film tells the tale of a grandfather busting his grandson out of jail and making a break for the border, all while dodging marshals, bounty hunters, and maybe a few ghosts of the past. But does this western ride high in the saddle, or does the on-set tragedy cast too big of a shadow?

Background & Interesting Details

Tragic On-Set Incident: During an October 2021 rehearsal, Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun loaded with a live round, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injury to director Joel Souza. This incident halted production and led to extensive legal proceedings.

Resumption of Filming: Production resumed in early 2023 with the support of Hutchins's husband, Matthew Hutchins, who became an executive producer. The film was completed with cinematographer Bianca Cline stepping in to finish Hutchins's work.

Premiere and Release: Rust premiered at the Camerimage Film Festival in Poland on November 20, 2024, and was released in U.S. theaters and on-demand platforms on May 2, 2025.

Critical Reception: The film received mixed reviews. Critics acknowledged the poignant cinematography as a tribute to Hutchins but noted that the narrative and performances were overshadowed by the real-life tragedy.
