This chapter offers a framework and insights to help you think about how and why you eat. It is not presented as a book of daily meditations or prayers, nor is it a quick fix like a surgeon removing a mole. There is no final plot twist or race to finish.
Instead, this is a book of ideas that offers insights and aims to show you the tools you already possess. It is described as a master’s degree in your life and a practice focused on changing the way you live. It encourages a deep dive into your own thinking, motivations, and triggers, to help you "lay new tracks on which to run".
To make this work for you, it requires internalizing the material through repetition and practice. You are encouraged to read a chapter over and over for many days, perhaps reading the same section daily for a week, finding what works for you. It is recommended to read a bit at a time, making each chapter a practice of days or weeks, returning to reread and contemplate sections on occasion. This is not something you get by reading in one sitting or a section a day.
This process requires focus, effort, and persistence, especially on challenging days. Self-directed change is hard, and anyone suggesting otherwise is trying to sell you a "magic pill". Remember that you are in charge of your life, and only you can make change happen through hard work and intent. It took your whole life to get where you are, so do not expect change by reading this book just one time in a few days.
