E328 - Phubbing Makes the Heart Grow Callous: Effects of Phubbing on Pro-social Behavioral Intentions, Empathy and Self-Control
This research investigates the impact of "phubbing" (phone snubbing) on an individual's prosocial intentions, examining the roles of empathy and self-control. The study used correlational and experimental methods to explore how habitual and momentary phubbing affect empathy and subsequent prosocial behavior. The findings suggest that phubbing negatively influences prosocial intentions by reducing empathy. Furthermore, habitual phubbing appears to impair self-control, unlike momentary instances. These results indicate that long-term phubbing may have distinct effects compared to isolated incidents. Ultimately, this research highlights the potential social consequences of smartphone use on interpersonal relationships and prosocial behavior.
