Oral + Gut Microbiome & Colon Cancer- Interview with Dr Amine ZORGANI
Manage episode 377025100 series 2890568
Incidence of cancer is increasing & around 13% of the Indian population is at high risk of developing cancer with more representation from younger population. It is one of the most complex diseases & the current set of interventions are just on suppressing tumours through modern medicine methods- chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery & more with limited success. Currently resources are scarcely deployed to understanding the onset & progression of various forms of cancer. Oncology is poised to see a lot of innovation with a number of startups entering this space to address cancer care. However, we still have to innovate in finding molecular signatures way before cancer develops. We started studying molecular interactions for autoimmune diseases, diabetes & more & we are now extending our knowledge footprint to cancer. Among various forms of cancer, Colon cancer is the top three most common cancer & second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide Research has now found that trillions of microorganisms living in our mouth & gut have a role to play in onset & progression of cancer. When it comes to colon cancer, the oral & gut microbiome potentially can develop cancer through their interaction with the human host. Altered gene expression of these oral & gut microbes can lead to production of harmful toxins such as LPS & overexpression of human genes & over activeness of certain proinflammatory molecules such as cytokines, TLR-2 & more. Some of pathogenic microbes living in the mouth such as Fusobacterium Nucleatum & P GIngivalis can actually alter the composition & functions of gut microbiome & lead to development of cancer. Similarly pro- inflammatory responses of certain microbes in the gut such as E. Facelias, E Coli & Peptostreptococcus are also one of potential causes of colon cancer. We had a great insightful & thought provoking discussion with Dr.Amine on the connection between oral & gut microbiome & cancer. This is a must listen talk. Thank you Dr.Amine for shedding light on this concerning topic. I am sure many people will benefit from your insight.
