Text: Prov 24:8-9 ESV

8 Whoever plans to do evil will be called a schemer.

9 The devising of folly is sin, and the scoffer is an abomination to mankind.

-Prov 24:8-9 ESV

BEWARE OF THE SCHEMER

The schemer are our scammer today. The word means literally "master of plots" or "owner of evil plans" or "deviser of wickedness." They are also scoffers. As a note, "scoffers" are those who mock or laugh. They "sneer" at wisdom instead of accepting it (Prov 1:22; 9:12; 14:6; 19:28). This is not only a reference to sin, but also a note about reputation. Eventually, liars and schemers are exposed. Thus, they are popularly known as unreliable and crooked.

In the beginning of the book of Romans, those who ignore God's revelation in human experience are labeled "inventors of evil" (Rom 1:18–20; 30) They are referred as "foolish, faithless, heartless, and ruthless" (Rom 1:31). Scriptures often warn us about such persons (Prov 6:14; 14:22).

One prominent example is Haman, the Agagite. His life became a warning about the fate of "schemers." He secretly devised an evil plot against Mordecai, Esther, and the Jews. [Es 8:3] He conspired to destroy all the Jews in Persia (Est 8:5). However, God protected the Jews and overturned Haman's wicked plot. Eventually, the king "gave orders in writing that [Haman's] evil plan that he had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows" (Es 9:25).

Planning immorality, plotting to do evil, inventing ways to harm others, or imagining wicked actions are all egregious sins, in and of themselves. This is diagnosed by Jesus as originating in the heart and mind (Mat 5:21–22). Even if it is still in the mind, the schemes and fantasies are already offensive to God (Matthew 5:27–28). Some believe thoughts are not sinful unless they are acted on, but Scripture clearly differs or disagrees.

They are an abomination to the Lord. The word "abomination" means "disgusting" or "repulsive" (Prov 6:16; 15:9; 21:27). Not only are those who plan evil offensive to God, but even men also detest them greatly. In the New Testament, Jude predicts that this attitude will become common as the world continues to drift away from God. [Jude 1:18–19]
