It has been eight years since a large fire swept through the southern Cape town of Knysna, destroying many homes but also wiping out an estimated 30 million honeybees and devastating their natural foraging areas. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Gift of the Givers and the non-profit organization called 'Hope for the Honeybees', large quantities of sugar was secured to provide an emergency sugar syrup feed to maintain the surviving bees, and within two years the local honeybee population was able to re-establish itself in the area. Lester Kiewit speaks to Owen Williams of the Knysna Beekeepers Association.
