CAN YOU GUESS THIS HERO? YOU KNOW HIM…

He was the young nose gunner in a B-29 Superfortress. This was his 25th and last mission. But it would be his toughest.

Their target was the Hodogaya Chemical Plant located in the heart of Tokyo City. A vital target that while operating provided the Japanese military with the critical chemicals needed to continue the war. As his bomber approached the target they were swarmed by Japanese Zero fighters.

The battle was intense, each member of the crew fighting for their lives and to protect their plane. Our hero, the bomber’s nose gunner, was hammered with enemy machineguns and 20-millimeter cannon, shattering the plexiglass. His blood was splattered everywhere but he stayed with his guns fighting to the end…

This special hero is one you’ve known all your life, but not by his true name. Like so many Americans, he came from hardworking, salt-of-the-earth immigrant parents.

In the shallow glitz of Hollywood, he would be the first to agree that he was a fish out of water. But whether playing a movie role, or finding himself in the heat of battle, he protected, fought for, and stood with his team, with his compatriots, with his friends and family to the end.

That is our American Hero we know and love.

I’m Rick Robison and this is the HEROES FOR FREEDOM Podcast.
