Ray Arnaudo is a retired U.S. government Civil Servant, and the former President of the American Polar Society. He has a long history of work in the area of US oceans and polar policy, with over thirty years' experience in international environmental and science policy affairs at the State Department. He served as the Director of Oceans and Polar Affairs at the State Department, and after that, he was a Senior Scholar at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Senior Advisor to the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative.

His work involved serving as head of U.S. delegations to Antarctic Treaty meetings, U.S. Commissioner to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, Chairman of the Arctic Council in 1998-2000. His postings overseas included Senior Advisor to the International Maritime Commission, Science Counselor at US Embassy London, Energy counselor, Embassy Moscow, and advisor to the National Science Foundation, while serving in Brussels. He led the negotiations to create the Arctic Council.

He has also served abroad in London, Moscow, and Brussels, and, for the last 4 years of his government career, served on Secretary of State Clinton’s Policy Planning Staff. Mr. Arnaudo is a Board member of the American Polar Society and serves on the American Committee on Antarctic Names. In recognition of his work, there is a small peak in the Commonwealth Range of Antarctica, named after him, Mount Arnaudo. Mr. Arnaudo received his BA degree from Stanford University and his M.A. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and served two years in the U.S. military. He is a native San Franciscan and avid bird watcher.
