Esparto Fireworks Explosion Update
Officials are continuing to investigate last week’s deadly explosion at a fireworks facility in the Yolo County town of Esparto, which sparked a wildfire and prompted evacuations. The remains of seven people were recovered over the weekend, as questions remain around the company that operated the warehouse and how the explosion occurred. CapRadio Reporter Gerardo Zavala joins Insight with an update from Esparto.POLITICO’s California Playbook
Dustin Gardiner, co-author of POLITICO’s California Playbook, joins Insight to provide a breakdown of the latest in state politics.
Homelessness Enforcement Increased Following SCOTUS Ruling
Last summer, the Supreme Court overturned some legal protections for unhoused residents in California and western states, giving cities more authority to arrest or cite people for camping on public property - even if no shelter beds are available. And a statewide analysis found that enforcement has ramped up in major cities, including Sacramento. A collaboration between CalMatters, LAist and the Voice of San Diego looked at how the lives of Californians experiencing homelessness has changed one year since the Supreme Court gave cities more latitude to sweep tent encampments. CalMatters Homelessness Reporter Marisa Kendall and Voices of San Diego Senior Investigative Reporter Lisa Halverstadt join us with how this dramatic change in enforcement is impacting unhoused people, and if this is actually solving the root of the crisis.CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state.
