Julia Corral! Portland! In this episode of Jokes and the Gym with Rudy Tyburczy, I sit down with fellow 41er and comedian Julia Corral, who shares her experience going from a day job to pursuing comedy full-time in Portland. Julia discusses her type A personality, the balance of urgency and relaxation in the Pacific Northwest, and her involvement with Kickstand Comedy. She reflects on her growth in comedy, her journey to sobriety, and the impact of alcohol on her personality. Our conversation also touches on spirituality (and how much of a hippie Julia is), communication in relationships, and the nuances of racism and identity in the Pacific Northwest. Julia and I also explore the complexities of cultural identity, personal growth, and the intricacies and challenges of relationships shaped by differing backgrounds. Julia shares her experiences as a Mexican American (and explains to me what “chicano” means) navigating her upbringing in a predominantly white culture, while also discussing her relationship with her husband and the cultural differences they encounter. We delve into comedy, touching on freedom of speech and the importance of humor in addressing societal issues. Julia reflects on her personal journey, including her struggles with anxiety and health, and emphasizes the significance of self-acceptance and growth. Our chat concludes with insights on how to embrace life's challenges and the importance of community and support in the pursuit of happiness.
