Legislation prohibiting face coverings, often colloquially termed ”burqa bans”, has become a pervasive global phenomenon, extending across Europe, Central Asia, Africa, and Asia. These policies are frequently justified by governments on grounds of public safety, secularism, cultural integration, and gender equality. However, a comprehensive examination of their implementation reveals a consistent pattern: these bans largely fail to achieve their stated objectives. Instead, evidence indicates that such measures produce significant negative human rights, social, psychological, economic, and inter-community consequences. Rather than fostering liberation or integration, these policies tend to further marginalise, alienate, and isolate the targeted Muslim women. The analysis suggests that the underlying rationale for these bans often stems from cultural anxieties and prejudices, which are then legitimised through legal frameworks, leading to counterproductive outcomes for both individuals and broader societal cohesion. To promote genuine integration and women’s empowerment, alternative approaches that prioritise human rights, foster inclusive public spaces, and address systemic inequalities are imperative.
