Kai started school on a Monday, in the middle of April. The Kahales were one hundred percent supportive of the change. Even Kai seemed game, letting me brush her long brown hair to pull it back with a gold barrette. Charlie brooded next to her, but she was undeterred.

"When I get home each day, we can exchange what we learned. Like we're learning from two schools," Kai said, soothing him with gentle pats on the arm.

But that was before her first day. When I picked her up, her gold barrette was gone, her hair disheveled like she had brawled, and she chucked her blazer into the car, nearly hitting me in the face. She was seething with rage she had kept inside for the school day.
